  1. Development and Application of Potentially Important Jute Geotextiles (CFC/IJSG/21) Field Trial Application of JGT for Hill Slope Management National Seminar at Kolkata on 19.09.2013 By Dr. G.P. Juyal Principal Scientist & Head (H&E) Central Soil & Water Conservation Research & Training Institute, 218, Kaulagarh Road, Dehradun248 195, Uttarakhand

  2. OBJECTIVES • Identification of suitable jute geotextiles (JGT) material and application technology for hill slope protection in different agro-climatic situations in India. • Identification of suitable vegetative species and their performance under JGT application. • Assessment of JGT application on soil loss and runoff through simulated laboratory studies (runoff plots/hydraulic flume) • Duration : 3 years • Year of start : 2010

  3. PROGRESS OF WORK • Sites selected for JGT application at 3 locations representing different hill eco-systems in India viz; • Western Himalaya (Dehradun HQ) • Shivalik hills (Chandigarh Centre of Institute) • Nilgiris hills (Ooty Centre of Institute) • Technical details of sites worked out. • Three types of JGT i.e. 500, 600 & 700 GSM applied at site by Dehradun, Chandigarh and UdhagamandalamCentres.

  4. SALIENT INFORMATION ON SELECTED SITES FOR JGT APPLICATION

  5. Installation of JGT at Ashti site, Chakrata Hills, Uttarakhand, N-W Himalaya, executed by CSWCRTI, Dehradun January 4th, 2012

  6. Geojute bundles being transported to site A close view of the untreated site Wooden pegs used for anchoring JGT JGT laid on ground (04.01.2012)

  7. JGT secured by constructing a trench on upper side Inspection of the JGT layout by experts of CSWCRTI & NJB (04.01.2012)

  8. PERFORMANCE OF JGT Performance of JGT after 6 months (July 2012) Vegetation in the JGT area (after one year)

  9. Survey of vegetation in JGT area Frequency and density of herbs, shrubs and grasses at sites treated with different geojute materials and control

  10. AFTER ONE & HALF YEARS Grasses & shurbs coming in geojute area Performance of JGT after 1 /2 years (17.07.2013 ) JGT reinforced staggered retaining walls (on downward side) performing well in retaining debris Area is freely grazed by goats

  11. A general view showing JGT application for hill slope management and JGT reinforced retaining walls below Performance of JGT in degraded hill slopes (July 2013, see gravels below) JGT reinforced retaining wall for debris retention and slope stabilization (A close view)
