  10. Choosing A College Questions to ask yourself: • Size of campus: Large or Small? • Location: Close to home or far away? • Setting: Urban, Suburban or Rural? • Do they have majors in my areas of interest? • Public or Private? • Tuition costs: Financial Aid or Scholarships?

  11. Campus Visits • Always check out a campus before you enroll. • Arrange a formal visit. Call admissions and they will set up a tour. • Visits are more productive when classes are in session. • Ask to see areas of interest such as an art studio, chemistry lab or field house. • A good time to set up college campus visits is during MEA break October 16th & 17th.

  12. Four Year Colleges/Universities • Safety- Your GPA, rank, and test scores (profile) is SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than the typical freshman. • Target- Your profile is similar to the typical freshman. • Reach - Your profile is not as strong as the typical freshman.

  16. ACT/SAT • Required for entrance into most 4 year schools • Most colleges accept either one • ACT accepted most places, including Midwest; SAT traditionally east or west coast schools • Ask your counselor about a fee waiver if needed.

South High Timeline • Visit your counselor at least once per quarter • Apply to all schools by Thanksgiving break (watch deadlines) • Athletes planning to play Division 1 or Division 2 schools must apply to the NCAA Clearinghouse • Begin Scholarship search early • Obtain letters of recommendation (allow 3 weeks) • Attend Financial Aid Night December 9, 2008 at SHS • File FAFSA after January 1 of senior year • Review acceptances and financial aid packages (spring) • Request Final Transcripts by completing your Senior Survey on Naviance in May

SHS Application Process • See handout about using the Counseling Department to process applications. • If a letter of recommendation is REQUIRED, complete resume information and schedule a ½ hour appointment with counselor for an interview. • Bring everything COMPLETED into the counseling office, along with $2 for each transcript needed. • We will mail the application and documents by the deadline.
