  1. Forgiveness Releasing the Shackles!

  2. Definition • 1. To excuse for a fault or an offense; pardon. • 2. To renounce anger or resentment against.

  3. A Christian Duty • “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive” –Colossians 3:12-13

  4. Duty Cont’d • It is our CHRISTIAN DUTY to forgive others! • Jesus made it VERY clear that forgiveness is to be a KEY characteristic of his followers

  5. What It Means To Forgive

  6. Meaning • It means to NEVER seek revenge! (Romans 12:19) • It means to LET GO of the anger we harbor inside us. • It does not mean to EXCUSE a wrong or DENYING it happened. • It does not mean we CURSE them either, we just PRAY for them.

  7. Scriptural References • Matthew 5:44 • 1 Peter 3:9 • Romans 12:17-21

  8. Why Forgive?

  9. So Why? • Anger is why • Anger is very destructive to yourself, but more importantly to your relationship w/ God. • Anger will consume us & affect our relationships with others. • If you want to have true peace you must forgive! • Forgiving benefits the who who is forgiving the most!

  10. How To Forgive

  11. Tips • Don’t Deny that you’ve been hurt.(Forgiving isn’t denying) • Make a decision to forgive others (Luke 17:3-5) • Do NOT seek revenge • Ask Jesus to help you w/ the anger inside you (Ephesians 4:26-27,31) • Pray for a forgiving heart and read what the Bible says about the subject. • Pray for those who have hurt you.

  12. God’s Forgiveness & Forgiving Yourself • God forgives us all of the time! The ultimate act of forgiveness was when he sent Jesus Christ down to earth to save us all from our evil ways.(John 3:16) (Acts 13:38-39) • Just think about the fact that before this happened, EVERY time someone sinned, they had to perform a sacrifice. (Law of Moses) Now all you have to do is ask God and you are forgiven.

  13. Cont’d • Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God.” • We are just human, and God knows this, but loves and FORGIVES us anyhow. (Romans 4:7) • For this same reason, this is why we should forgive.

  14. Forgiving Yourself Cont’d • It is important to forgive yourself of past mistakes. Take them as learning opportunities instead of guilt trips. • God wants you to be free of guilt! (2 Corinthians 5:17) • God forgave you the first time you asked him to.

  15. 3 Steps to Forgiving Yourself • Confess ALL your sins to God (1 John 1:9) • Ask for his forgiveness • Receive his forgiveness in your heart • Remember that Forgiving yourself is DECISION. God’s forgiveness comes from his grace and mercy.
