  1. Lesson Two: What is PowerChart? • At the conclusion of this section, you will be able to: • Describe the primary features and benefits of using PowerChart • Determine how PowerChart interacts with Eclipsys

  2. Major Concepts • There are a few major terms with which you will need to become familiar. • Electronic Medical record • Cross Encounter • Eclipsys • Downtime • Security • Let’s look at each one separately, then we will put the pieces together.

  3. Electronic Medical Record • A separate Electronic Medical record (EMR) is maintained in PowerChart for each patient. • The EMR is the electronic equivalent of a patient’s written chart.

  4. Cross Encounter • An encounter is just another term for a patient visit. • A patient’s individual EMR will contain information drawn from across different visits in different departments, thus creating a cross encounter.

  5. Eclipsys • Eclipsys is the Patient Management system at CHKDHS. It is used to maintain Admission, Discharge and Transfer transactions (ADT). • A patient must be previously registered or admitted via Eclipsys or Epic in order to generate an EMR. • Patients for whom no EMR has been created will not be available from within eKiDs PowerChart.

  6. Epic • Epic is CHKDHS’s Physician Practice Management system which interfaces with Eclipsys. • Patient information is sent from Epic to Eclipsys and PowerChart.

  7. Downtime • Downtime is a period of time during which one or more information systems are down for repair or routine maintenance. • In the case of routine maintenance, scheduled downtime will occur. • Unscheduled downtime may also occur in the case of an emergency repair.

  8. Security • Security is maintained through individual Usernames and Passwords. • PowerChart logs each clinician’s activity, such as creating a role, reviewing results, or otherwise changing chart information. • Security ensures that patient information remains confidential by tracking users’ interactions with patient records.

  9. Let’s Put It All Together Try thinking of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) as an assembly line.

  10. Assembling the EMR Each software package behaves like a station along that assembly line inspecting the product and adding or modifying parts along the process. • Eclipsys and Epic add and update ADT information. • PowerChart provides a view into the EMR and allows some clinicians to order labs, radiology exams, etc. • Programs like PathNet, RadNet and CareNet provide test results. • All updates to the EMR occur immediately.

  11. So…What is PowerChart? • PowerChart is a flexible, graphical tool that provides clinicians immediate access to the information in the clinical database. • The information that can be viewed from within PowerChart includes items such as: • Demographic Information • Previous Visits to CHKDHS • Test results and reports • Current clinical orders along with their statuses • Electronic documentation from various locations

  12. PowerChart Features & Benefits • Patient information and results are available on-line in a graphical format • PowerChart provides the clinician with an immediate, easy-to-read display of patient information • Results from previous visits can be displayed along with current results • PowerChart decreases the amount of time tracking down patient results

  13. PowerChart Features & Benefits • Preferences can be set for each clinician to provide an appropriate view to the patient charts • PowerChart displays can be filtered based on professional and personal needs • Patient lists can be created based on provider role, patient location, or personal preference • PowerChart supports daily workflow by organizing multiple patients’ charts

  14. Lesson Two:Review • A number of programs such as Eclipsys, Epic and SoftMed provide specialized pieces to the EMR. • PowerChart allows a clinician to view chart information from different departments within CHKD. • Security is vital to maintaining patient confidentiality.
