  5. Asexual Reproduction Natural “cloning” of the parent plant. Parts of the plant, such as leaves or stems, produce roots and become an independent plant. • List some benefits and some drawbacks to asexual reproduction.

  6. Sexual Reproduction • When male cells in the pollen grain join with female cells in the ovule. • List some advantages and drawbacks to sexual reproduction.

  7. Pollination • Transfer of mature pollen grains from the anther to the stigma • -wind • -insects • -birds & other animals

  8. Flowers • Compete flowers have four basic parts: • Sepals • Petals • Stamens • Pistil

  9. Sepals Sepals are leaf-like structures that form an outer ring around the base of a flower. Sepals enclose and protect a flower bud before it opens. The complete ring of sepals is called the calyx. Sepals

  10. Petals Colored part of a flower that attract pollinators. Petals

  11. Stamen Anther Male reproductive part of the flower. Contains both the filament and the anther. Filament

  12. Pistil Stigma The pistil includes three parts: 1. Stigma2. Style3. Ovary Style Ovary

  13. Stigma A sticky, flattened surface that collects pollen. Birds and insects collect nectar from previously visited plants and brush against the sticky surface of the stigma. Stigma

  14. Style a supportive structure that holds the stigma. Style

  15. Ovary an enlarged structure that contains the female sex cells, or ovules. The pollen tube grows through the ovary and into an ovule. Pollen Tube Ovary Ovule
