3. Using Concordia Libraries • Concordia has 2 libraries: Webster & Vanier • ID card is your library card • Borrow 30 books for 3 weeks (subject to recall) • Create PIN in MyCLUES on Library web site • Renew materials online • Request materials • Access online journals and databases from home

4. Using Other Libraries • Get CREPUQ card at the Circulation Desk to borrow up to 3 books at other university libraries • Use the Interlibrary Loans service to request books, articles, etc. from other libraries • Check the catalogues of other library catalogues from the QUICKLINKS

5. Your research assignment • Locate and evaluate sources of information about your artifact and its place in contemporary society. • Find: • Book(s) • Scholarly journal(s) • Popular media source(s)

6. Scholarly Publications • Usually academic author and affiliation • Published by university or recognized scholarly publisher • Evidence of research and analysis; not just opinions • Extensive bibliographies

7. Popular Publications • author generally not associated with university or research • often provides descriptions, biographies, opinions • generally highly illustrated with lots of visuals • doesn’t include bibliography

Preparing your search: identify keywords • Begin with specific object ……. • ipodnano • ipod • You may not find resources on specific artifact, so you will search for materials using more general categories your artifact belongs to….. • Music and digital • Digital and culture • Technology and culture While searching always check for alternative keywords to use

10. Why use Journals & Magazines • Recent research is often published in journal literature • Articles often focus on more specific issues or questions

11. Databases | tools for identifying articles in journals You can use Google Scholar …. but For more recent and complete coverage use DATABASES

Use DATABASES to find journal articles Interdisciplinary Databases • Academic Search Complete – popular & scholarly • JSTOR – mostly scholarly, but most recent not available Humanities & Social Sciences • Articles related to culture and society in a broader context Art & Design Databases • Articles on object in context of art, design and design history Business Databases • Articles on object in relation to consumers, marketing, trends ….. Design Research Guide has a list of databases to consider ……

13. How to find the journals • From database use • Check E-journals page • Check to find out if library has online subscription and if so, the date coverage • Check CLUES • Check for dates • Get call no. • If using in library, you will need a Copy Card • Articles from paper journals can be requested through Article Delivery service • Check other libraries • Go to library and photocopy • Request via InterLibrary Loans

14. Google Scholar • Covers some journal and book literature • Not as comprehensive as databases • If working off campus, check to see if library has article or book – don’t pay for materials

17. Google Books provide scans of parts of books ranging from a few lines to entire chapters • You can use to: • check the contents of books • search on highly specific keywords to find potential books for your research

25. And so…… a few things to remember • Create a Library PIN in MyCLUES • When searching play with language to find good key words • Check bibliographies of books & articles that are relevant …. You may discover other documents you can use • Start early…. Some of you may have to spend up to 5 or more hours to find good references
