  3. Breaking New GroundMcGill’s IMHL Program • is a unique approach that concentrates the learning experience on key issues of participants and their respective organizations and communities • uses the classroom as a thoughtful forum of “friendly consultants” - colleagues and faculty - from around the world • is an innovative and tested educational model designed for the health sector • promotes the development of a sustainable and integrated approach to health worldwide encompassing health promotion, prevention and treatment • offers a Masters of Management degree to senior and emerging practicing health managers • is international in scope, and unlike any program ever offered in health

  4. Evolution of the IMHL concept • builds on two successful programs – the International Masters Program in Practicing Management (IMPM) and the McGill-McConnell Program for National Voluntary Sector Leaders – both inspired by Dr. Henry Mintzberg, named one of the most influential management thinkers in the world by the New York Times • is designed around “leadership mindsets”, a dynamic model to explore different realms of management: the ability to transform people, organizations, systems and their contexts • offers a tremendous opportunity to develop health managers wanting to have a meaningful and lasting impact in health by drawing on the international expertise of McGill’s Faculties of Medicine and Management

  5. Participants Participants hold significant positions of responsibility and collectively they are from: • all regions of the world • all types of health-related organizations (hospitals, community care, public health, government ministries, international agencies, foundations, others) • all manners of clinical backgrounds (physicians, nurses, pharmacists, other health professions) and other backgrounds (economists, lawyers, etc.) • all areas of health, from prevention to care Participants continue to work throughout the program

  6. Program Design Overview • The learning is concentrated on the needs of participants and their respective organizations and communities • The program is delivered in five twelve-day modules over a 16-month period • Each module corresponds to a specific “leadership mindset” • Other educational activities include the anchoring project, managerial exchange, reflection papers, tutoring, self-study and a final paper

  7. Program Design Each module corresponds to a specific “leadership mindset”: Module 1: The Reflective Mindset – Broadening Perspectives Module 2: The Analytic Mindset – Leading Organizations Module 3: The Worldly Mindset – Navigating the System Module 4: The Collaborative Mindset – Appreciating Work Relationships Module 5: The Catalytic Mindset – Achieving Change

  8. Program Design Participants continue to work throughout the program

  9. Benefits for Participants • program delivered in short blocks of time, enabling candidates to remain on the job • access to leading-edge management education with internationally known faculty members • educational model that focuses learning on the experiences and key issues that participants bring to class • opportunity to work on a project to effect significant change within one’s own organization and community • opportunity to present and publish findings at conferences and in leading health publications

  10. Benefits for Organizations • issues of concern for the sponsoring organization or community are brought to class • potential for significant change as participants benefit from the ‘friendly consulting’ of their colleagues and faculty • the sponsoring organization develops as their participants develop • strengthen the bond between the participating managers and their organizations and communities • Creation of Impact teams back-home in the organization for a lasting impact

  11. Benefits for the Health Sector • a key international forum where the truly major issues of the management of health care are addressed and advanced on an ongoing basis • reshapes the way health leaders and managers from around the world interpret and respond to today’s pressing issues – people rooted in their community, yet able to take a system perspective • promotes the development of a sustainable and integrated approach to health worldwide encompassing health promotion, prevention and treatment • eclectic groups of participants, learning in and for communities, contribute to worldwide networking in the health sector
