  2. New Engineering Foundation Founded in Sept 2004, the New Engineering Foundation is a charity that supports E & T education through: • Educational programmes and resources • Research studies • Policy advice and advocacy

  3. Research Knowledge and Technology Exchange in FE (2005) The Path to Productivity: the Progress of Work Based Learning Strategies in HE Engineering Programmes – (now) Building for the Future: Understanding the Needs of Lecturers of E & T Education in FE Colleges – (now) Programmes & Resources A national Fellowship Scheme (2005, 2006, 2007) E-learning resources (Innovation, Creativity, Entrepreneurship, Business Engagement) – available now through Knowledge Centre and CD

  4. …Introducing the New Engineering Fellowship Scheme…

  5. Technical Professional Development • Lack of formal professional development plans in Eng & Tech technology; • The concentration of course provision within a narrow band and level of engineering and technology subjects; • Weak and underdeveloped links with employers & colleges; • Staff development is highly dependant on internal college funds; • Limited uptake of new teaching methodologies such as e-learning; • Limited engagement in technology and knowledge transfer activities; • The level of engagement in commercial projects is very limited; • Poor physical resources; • There is a healthy appetite for self-development and engagement in KTE activities. 82 FE Colleges Surveyed, Sept 04 – Report available from www.neweng.org.uk

  6. The New Engineering Fellowship Scheme • Started April 2005 • Aims to initially support some 70 FE colleges (200 Fellows). • We are now taking applications for placements in 2007. • £10 k for 3 lecturers • £ 6k for 2 lecturers • £ 3k for 1 lecturer We have received support from over 200 companies so far – and the list continues to grow…!

  11. Decision Process Applications Panel Assessment Colleges informed of Panel decision with one week of meeting Successful lecturers asked to provide dates of placements and company contact details Unsuccessful colleges invited to re-apply at a later date Grant paid to college

  12. Placements Lecturers carry out placements Lecturers write up experience NEF Awards Seminar Certificates given to Fellows Certificates given to Industrial Supervisors Presentations given by 5 lecturers and 5 host companies Poster Session NEF converts the material to e-learning and places it on VKC Material available to all other lecturers at the Fellow’s college and at all other colleges around the country

  13. Dr Mike Ryan of Broxtowe College’s placement at Industrial Automation Ltd centred around modern manufacturing methods, of which robotics obviously plays an important role. The full gamut of how ideas are turned into products was included in his e-learning materials Examples Rachel Price City of Wolverhampton College went to Goodrich Aerospace and studied flap actuation systems for a military transport aircraft. She produced a very good worksheet for her students leading them to discover the power required in a motor to move a flap during flight. Gary Potts from Darlington College produced a module on Principles of CIM Systems as a result of his placement at Teesside University. As an example for his students, he made a metal chess set using the apparatus seen in the picture.

  14. Seminar & Award Ceremony

  15. Issues • Timetabling the scheme within colleges • Company Priorities • Structural Issues • College Mergers • Organisational changes and staff movements • HoD / Senior Manager Commitment • Teaching Materials / e-learning Materials How effective is the experience gained is utilised in improving the student’s learning experience?
