  1. Customer Empowered Optical Networks - CESNET´s Approach Jan Gruntorád, Stanislav Šíma CESNET, z.s.p.o. Czech Republic Internet2 Member Meeting Arlington, April 9th, 2003

  2. Presentation overwiev • CESNET introduction • Concept of Customer Empowered networks • Access to dark fibers • NIL – Nothing in Line concept • Future plans

  3. CESNET, z. s. p. o. • Established as legal entity – not for profit Association of Legal Entities (z.s.p.o.) in 1996 • 27 Universities • Czech Academy of Science • 48 staff members in Prague • more than 100 part-time member universities and academy of sciences staff

  4. Funding • Research Intend: „High Speed National Research Network and Its New Applications“ • 1999-2003 • Supported by Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic: • Institutional Funds: 6.6 mil. EURO/ year • Members fees: 2.5 mil.EURO/ year

  5. Concept of Customer Empowered Networks - more flexibility for the „Customer“ - more cost effective - access to dark fibres essential

  6. 1999 Telecom market situation in CZ - offer much higher than demand Convinced one company (MERO) lease dark fiber between Praha – Brno for pilot project.

  7. Prague-Brno circuit capacity 2,5 Gbps

  8. Last (First Mile Issue) - concept of „meeting“ point - joined investment of fiber provider, CESNET and local organization to fiber between „meeting“ point and CESNET PoP location

  9. Praha – PardubiceLong distance GE line

  10. Praha – Pardubice(Long distance GE line since May 17, 2002) • 189 km leased fibre G.652, attenuation 44.65dB, • without in-line equipment • Traffic statistics: • http://www.cesnet.cz/provoz/zatizeni/ • Line cards: GE for GSR with GBIC-ZX • Optical amplifier: Keopsys KPS-BT-C-21-Bo-FA • 21dBm booster • Optical attenuator: 5dB (for optical amplifier • input)

  11. Recomended applications for GE speed • Booster only - up to 180km • Booster with preamp - up to 220km • Booster with preamp and Raman - up to 270km

  12. 10 Gigabit EthernetTesting Configuration with Booster Only

  13. 10 Gigabit Ethernet Testing Configuration with Booster and Preamplifier

  14. 10 Gigabit Ethernet Testing Configuration with Booster, Preamplifier and RamanPump

  15. Ostrava – OpavaIntercity bi-directional two wavelength transmission on single fibre

  16. Ostrava – OpavaSingledark fibre line • FE line since March26, 2003 • 47 km leased single dark fibre • Converters MRV EM316 WFC/S4 & MRV EM316 WFT/S4 • Traffic statistics: • http://www.ten.cz/provoz/zatizeni/ten155_mapa_static_output • /Line_usage_Opava-_Ostrava.10min.current.html/

  17. Global lambda network
