  1. Algebra Actually we are learning a new language… It’ not about the maths It’s about the English! Algebra!

  2. Algebra y = mx + c We are going to be exploring this equation this week to understand what it means.

  3. Algebra y = mx + c By the end of the week you should : Understand what the y, m, x and c stand for Be able to plot a straight line graph using this equation Be able to read values for x and y off the graph you plot.

  4. Algebra We are going to start by taking the equation y = x+1. If we replace x with a 3 then we know what y will be. 3 y = x +1 y = 4

  5. Algebra We replace x with several numbers and work out what y is each time. We put these in a table. 1 2 3 4

  6. Algebra We can add a new row to the table for a new equation, now lets add a row for y=x+2and fill in the blanks 1 2 3 4 2 3 4 5

  7. y 8 7 6 5 4 3 1 2 3 4 2 1 y=x+1 0 x 1 2 3 4 The final task is to plot the x and y points on a graph x x x x

  8. Algebra You have four tables of equations. Your task this lesson is to: Work out the missing values of y for each equation Plot the line for each equation Identify how m and c affect the line!
