  1. Broadwing Media Services August, 2004

  2. Who We Are and What We Provide • Specialized vertical supported by a media market team with 15+ years of experience working together • The focus is to offer both retail and wholesale media transport services to the broadcast TV and media producer market • We are providing a specialized, media-focused array of products with unmatched flexibility and performance, which are critical to our customers • We will also provide CATV Interconnect • Bundled VOD, VOIP and low-cost peering between cable operators for their broadband products

  3. The Network • Broadwing owns & operates the nation’s only All-Optical Network • Precision Engineered • All-optical long haul network & IP backbone • Deeply interconnected local network • Last mile transport diversity • Converged, unified product platform • Best in Class Equipment • Best in breed partnerships across all service platforms • Broad Reach • Our network goes where you need it to go • Massive Capacity • Up to 800Gbps per fiber pair

  4. Benefits of All-Optical Fewer Points of Failure • Up to 10 times less manipulation of your data signal (O-E-O regeneration) than with competitor’s networks • Up to 10 times less equipment to break… • Simplified support with far less spare hardware inventory required Highest Performance • Less regeneration affords the lowest possible latency Faster Provisioning • Remote configuration of wavelengths across the backbone Enables Unique Services • Such as MultiConnect, CoreConnect and the Media Platform

  5. Media Network Architecture

  6. Media Technology Overview • DTM: Dynamic Synchronous Transfer Mode • “Next Generation SONET” rides existing DWDM infrastructure • Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) provides highest bandwidth utilization, optimal latency and jitter performance, “100% QoS” • Same 125 microsecond frame length as SONET • Each frame divided into 64-bit slots • Slots aggregated to provide required circuit bandwidth: • Same slots every frame, same path every time • Highly consistent • Addresses shortcomings in existing SONET, DS1/DS3 and E1/E3 hierarchies. • Granular bandwidth provisioning: 512K bps increments • Dynamic bandwidth provisioning: DTM nodes create and delete circuits in near real-time • Point-to-multipoint capabilities without Ethernet or IP overhead

  7. Media Customer Interfaces • Our network provides underlying transport for a variety of customer-interface applications • Ethernet: Our network provides both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint electrical and optical Ethernet connections. 802.1q VLAN tag support. Bandwidth allocated in 512Kbps increments. • SDI: Our network carries uncompressed standard-definition video at SDI’s native 270 Mbps speed. SDI becomes more cost-effective than DS3. • ASI: Our network offers ASI-aware customer interfaces. Program streams use only the required bandwidth across the network. No need to pay for 45Mbps to carry an 8Mbps MPEG stream. • OC3C: Our network equipment can carry legacy network traffic over OC3C point-to-point connections. • PRI / T1 voice: Traditional voice T1 circuits can be carried from customer-premises equipment to the Broadwing voice network.

  8. Media Services Portfolio • Dedicated Circuits • “Always On” end-to-end connections • All supported access (SDI, ASI, TDM, Ethernet) • Priced in 1 Mbps increments, per mile, per month. • Occasional Use Circuits • Reservation-oriented, usage based service • Access to 3rd party switches for added versatility • Priced in 1 Mbps increments, per minute. • Video Circuit Enhancements • Adds full video testing, configuration, monitoring and support from Broadwing’s new, state-of-the-art T.O.C. • Multicasting • Enhance Dedicated or Occasional Use circuits for point-to-multipoint distribution applications, without IP or MPLS overhead. • EventConnect • An complete package of services, integrating video, voice and data connections in support of broadcast events from a variety of venues.

  9. Specialized Applications • Mezzanine-level, contribution quality HDTV:Broadwing-integrated solution to deliver lightly compressed HDTV signals over 270 Mbps SDI-over-DTM connections. • Multipoint real-time media distribution:A single TV1 or SDI feed can be distributed to multiple destinations, simultaneously, over the DTM backbone. • Occasional services:Usage-based, high-bandwidth transport service. Highly competitive cost model allows uncompressed SDTV at compressed service prices. Can also be used for occasional transport of data or file transfer over SDI and/or Ethernet access. • Interconnect with “The Switch” and other third-party metro services for maximum flexibility and reach. • Real-time capable for occasional contribution quality services.

  10. Service Offerings – EventConnect • EventConnect (A Complete Package of Services) • Video • Compressed • Uncompressed • HDTV • Multiple Feeds • Data • Internet • IP with 100% QoS (file transfer) • Event VPN • Radio • Replaces current ISDN service • Voice • Intercom • IFB • Telephone • Occasional Use Service • Per Mbps per minute pricing • Point-to-Multipoint • High Bandwidth to Prem • SDIs • Dark Fiber • HDTV • Managed Services • CPE Gear • Wireless Hubs
