  2. Introduction Slide Research Question: Does sweet basil grow taller in the light or dark by the end of 5 weeks? Hypothesis: We think that sweet basil will grow the tallest in the light.

Background Information • The function of the organic compounds that gives sweet basil its unique flavor is Insecticide. • The insecticide is to protect the plant from being eaten by insects. • Our herb’s organic compound is an adaptation because it protects the plant. • Basil is most commonly used for cooking, its mainly used in things like pesto and vinegar. It also used to make oil for salads. Basil is sometimes used as an ingredient in medicines.

  5. Plant Factors The 3 factors that affect the growth of a plant are: • Light • Water • Temperature

General Plant Information • Photosynthesis is the process where carbon dioxide is converted into energy or organic compound like sugar using sunlight. • The overall chemical reaction for photosynthesis is: 6CO2 + 6H2O (+ light energy) C6H12O6 + 6O2 3. Xylem is important for photosynthesis because it transports water and dissolved nutrients.

METHODS OR PROCEDURES For this investigation we had 3 simple methods, first we… • Formed a group of 4 people • We labeled 2 cups with our group number and period then wrote light or dark on the cups • We then placed cotton, soil, and 3 seeds in each cup. • Then we watched over 3 weeks how the plants grew watering them most days.

  8. Observations • Our plant grew towards the light, this process is called phototropism. • The roots of our plant grew down into the soil due to gravity. This process is called geotropism. • Something unusual that we observed during this investigation was that the stems of the dark plant were white and the leaves were yellow.

  10. Conclusion Our results showed that sweet basil grew tallest in the dark, but only by .1 inch. Our graph showed that the basil growing in the dark was always taller starting on Jan. 20 except on January, 24 and February, 1 when it was the same height as the plants in the light. • Our data refuted our hypothesis, we thought the plant in the light would grow tallest. Questions we thought of were: • Which plant would grow tallest after a month? • Why did the leaves and stem of the plant in the plant turn different colors?
