  1. Reflexive Movement Phase

  2. What is a reflex? • An involuntary muscular response to a sensory stimulus • Certain sensations are known to produce specific muscular responses

  3. Reflexes • What role do infantile reflexes serve? • Information about CNS • Neurological dysfunction • absences or prolonged continuation

  4. Reflexive = heredity • Approximate age periods – In utero through 1 year • Building blocks for voluntary movements

  5. Pathological • Involuntary shifts of muscle tone interfere with smooth, coordinated movements • Making the movements “clumsy”

  6. Approximate timetables for appearance & inhibition • Neurological Dysfunction suspected when: • reflex observed beyond time

  7. Complete absence of reflex • Unequal responses • Responses too strong or weak • Lifespan reflexes • patella tendon, withdrawal, blinking, gagging, yawning, coughing

  8. Primitive SurvivalReflexes • involuntary • nourishment oriented • appear during fetal life and into first year

  9. Postural Reflexes • Resemble voluntary movements • Crawling, stepping, and swimming, Parachuting, Head Righting, etc.

  10. Of the reflexes reviewed, which ones could be considered locomotor in nature ? • Crawling, stepping, and swimming

  11. APGAR Scores Named after Dr. Virginia Apgar- developed in 1952 Assessment of newborn 60 sec. after birth, repeated 5 minutes after Heart rate, respiratory, muscle tone, skin color, catheter in nostril response Scoring = 0, 1, 2, Perfect = 10 – best possible health 0-3 = Immediate resuscitation

  13. How else do infants move? • Rhythmical Stereotypies • Spontaneous movements • Rhythmic flapping of arms and legs
