Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, and Created a liberal democratic government who invited Settlement in Texas Newcomers had to become citizens, show good character, and obey Mexican laws (speak Spanish, convert to Catholicism, no slavery) - these rules were hardly enforced “The Old 300”, led by Stephen F. Texas rebels stood their ground in October of 1835 when the Mexican army tried to remove a cannon from Gonzalez Texans declared independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836 Santa Anna was set on stopping the rebellion and marched his army to San Antonio Battle at the Alamo(February 23-March 6, 1836) Texans were outnumbered 30 to 1 but stayed and died for their cause- inspired the rebellion to continue Battle of Goliad- Santa Anna crushed the rebels and executed all Texans after the battle was over

Battle of San Jacinto (April 21, 1836)- Texans under Sam Houston shouted “remember the Alamo, remember Goliad” as they defeated the Mexicans and captured Santa Anna Texas assumed they would be annexed as a territory or state by the U.S., but slavery stood in their way- The Republic of Texas lasted for 9 years Texas was annexed in March of 1845
