People involved……. • John Quincy Adams – secretary of state. • Pioneers/emigrants – those who left the United States to go to Oregon. • John O’Sullivan – declared America’s situation as the , ‘’Manifest Destiny.’’ • Robert Stuart and Jedediah both found the South Pass. • Mountain Men – spent most of their time in the Rocky Mountains. • John Jacob Astor – creator of the American fur company.

  3. The Importance…….. • To extend its boundaries all the way to the Pacific and grow economically.

  4. The facts…… • In 1819 Adams negotiated the Adams Onis Treaty with Spain. • In 1818 Adams worked out an agreement with Britain for a joint occupation of the area. • The first Americans to reach Oregon were fur traders. • Some Mountain Men worked for fur – trading companies. • The South Pass became the main route that settlers took to Oregon . • Democrats campaigned using the slogan ,’’fifty – four forty or fight’’

  5. Causes…… • Britain refused on dividing the 49n line of latitude because they wanted the bigger share………………… • The Great Migration began …………………… • In the 1830s Americans sought to fulfill their Manifest Destiny……………………..

  6. Background…. • For the United States to extend its borders from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. • With many refusals about dividing Oregon it became official to divide it down the 49n latitude.

  7. The impact ……. • The United States grew in wealth and in size this is what makes it so large in population and in size.

  8. Effects....... • Unable to resolve the conflict they extended the joint occupation......they later excepted the border line at 49n. • Many people made the trip (pioneers/emigrants). • It looked much closer to home than Oregon .

  9. Important events…… • Adams Onis Treaty is signed. . • Marcus Whitman builds mission in Oregon . • ‘’Oregon Fever’’ sweeps through Mississippi Valley . • U.S and Britain set the Oregon Boundary at 49n .

The conclusion …. • The ending of the Oregon Country Trail was in the 1940s. • The situation of America extending its boundaries to the pacific was called .’’Manifest Destiny.’’ • Even though many people were killed during the Whiteman Mission settlers still continued there journey into Oregon. • President Polk was determined to make Oregon part of the U..S. Which he did………………..
