  2. Writing Assignment • In this assignment you will write a persuasive essay defining what you consider to be the qualities of a good leader by describing someone who manifests those qualities.

  3. It’s true that heroes are inspiring, but mustn’t they also do some rescuing if they are to be worthy of their name? Would wonder Woman matter if she only sent commiserating telegrams to the distressed? -Jeannette Wilson You should begin thinking of a creative way to introduce your essay and HOOK the reader’s attention.

  4. Types of Hooks • Short Story • Quote • Startling Statement • Statistic • Definition • Hypothetical situation- Drop your reader into a scene. • Rhetorical Question • In groups of two try to come up with a good hook for a great leader persuasive essay.

  5. Professional Model pgs. 348-349 • What the author did well… • Used a quote to capture the reader’s attention • Explained the view on leadership (more simply-definition) • Introduced the person that they view as a great leader (clear thesis statement)

  7. To begin… • List all the qualities of a good leader. • Think about who you would like to nominate as a good leader and persuade others of the same idea. • Complete a graphic organizer to serve as prewriting before you begin your first draft.

Peer Editing • In groups of four, you will complete a peer editing workshop. • Complete the peer editor’s checklist. • Offer constructive criticism, be sure to help your classmates IMPROVE their writing rather than destroy their work of art. • You will receive a grade as a peer editor, you will be looking for specific attributes in the essay! • Questions, questions, questions??? • Submit rough draft with peer editor sheet attached.

Revisions & Editing • Review the peer editing worksheets and consider the evaluator’s suggestions. • Check for a clear organized essay that presents a logical sequence. • Be sure to use persuasive techniques • Is there a voice in your writing? • Is it engaging? • Replace weak words with stronger, interesting or evocative words. • Are there any repetitive phrases or words that can be replaced?

  12. Final Draft- major assessment • You should be thrilled with the amount of effort and time you have dedicated to this writing assignment. Feel free to share your essay, or a portion of it with the class. Job well done ladies and gents 
