  2. Jan van Eyck was born around 1395 in Maasiek, Belgium. • He died in 1441 in Burges, Netherlands. He was a well known northern Renaissance painter in the 15th century. Jan was one of the earliest Flemish oil painters.

  3. In 1432 he created one of his most famous paintings. It is called the “Adoration of the Lamb.” A lamb is worshiped by groups of angels, martyrs, prophets and apostles. The work in 1432 was one of the first painted altar pieces in North and West Europe. The lamb, bleeding from its neck is symbolic for Jesus sacrificing his life in order to redeem humankind from its sins.

  4. The Madonna of Chancellor Rolin In 1435 Jan painted Nicolas Rolin a chancellor to Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy sitting opposite to the virgin Mary with a child. From the painting above you can see how this is a renaissance painting because of the detailed depth of the landscape and lots of natural detail. It also has religious scenes since virgin Mary is present.

  5. The Annunciation In 1427-29 Eyck painted these two panels that represent the Ghent Altarpiece. This painting shows twelve angels singing beside a well detailed organ and floor.
