  2. Sanitation is Removal and disposal of human waste in such a way that it creates a hygienic environment that reduces the risks of pathogen transmission from human waste. (JMP, 2005) • IWRM principles: • Equity • Efficiency • Environmental Sustainability

  3. 2.Background • Worldwide, over 2.6 billion individuals live without sanitation. • Another 2.8 billion individuals have access to some type of sanitation, mostly pit latrines. • About 1.1 billion individuals have water-born sewerage of which 30% are connected to an advanced sewage treatment facility • The remaining 70% are sources of downstream contamination Sanitation Coverage of Greater Horn Countries(JMP 2004)

  4. It is Worth Spending on IWRM Oriented Sustainable Sanitation Since it Reduces Child Mortality • Environmental sanitation(the control of mosquito breeding and the use of mosquito net is reported to reduce child mortality by 50 % in Ethiopia

  5. why iwrm oriented sanitation(IOSS)? IOSS contributes to • Profitability: every $1 invested in sanitation provides an economic rate of return of $8 • Improved health • Productivity • Better environment • Food security • Forestry • Renewable energy • IWRM oriented sustainable sanitation (IOSS) is an appropriate response to the environmental challenges being faced as demonstrated in greater horn countries and elsewhere

  6. The link between IWRM and Sustainable Sanitation Sustainable Sanitation IWRM

  7. 7.Review of best practices to be replicated in Greater Horn Countries

  8. 7.1. Examples of best practices

  9. Ethiopia: Open-air defecators pick up their own punishment1 1Source:Matebu Tadesse, Plan Ethiopia, Peter McIntyre,IRC, August 2007 • No defecation in the open – not ever • Some people in this Ethiopian village thought that the new rule did not apply to them and carried on as they did before. But men caught with their trousers around their ankles soon wished that they had obeyed community wishes. They found themselves carrying their own shit to the nearest latrine.

  12. The six processes being followed by health extension workers in changing behaviours in Ethiopia Community consultation supported with household level health extension program enhances behavioural change as demonstrated in Ethiopia

  13. conclusion • IWRM and Sustainable Sanitation link to be strengthened through the interaction of GWP and WSSCC at all levels • Use the International Sanitation year 2008 for generating more fund • linkage of IWRM and Environmental Sanitation shall be enhanced to give sanitation a big momentum • Engage country, regional and global water partnerships in enhancing the linkage of IWRM and Sanitation by incorporating eco sanitation in IWRM pilot projects that are to be replicated sooner or later. • A Shift from waste minded state to resource minded state required at all levels. This obliges to bring the agricultural sector to the partnership of the water, health and education sectors. • Employ the health extension and agricultural extension services in promoting IWRM oriented Sustainable Sanitation (IOSS). • Further innovative action in regard to behavioural change needs to be undertaken
