Introduction • From the beginning the Santander Group has participated actively in the development and use of XBRL. • This presentation is divided in three parts: • An introduction explaining the action items carried out last year. Making the first steps towards a corporative framework for the use of XBRL. • Action items that to be carried out in the short and medium-long term. • The following slide shows the main action items developed during the last year related to XBRL within the Santander Group.

Short Term Strategy. • XBRL international consortium propose as strategy to diffuse the language firstly to the documents with financial information to enlarge it later on to the non financial information • After that the specifications will extend so that all the external financial documents (inside each jurisdiction, to develop extensions to the general or main taxonomy that reflect the particularities of the different activity sectors) • Following the same strategy in the short term, the Santander Group will focus using XBRL for regulatory reporting purpose.

Short Term Strategy. • To be compliance with regulatory reports: Two actions: • Maintain the present solution • Installing a new Bank of Spain converter that will provide support to the taxonomy of COREP. • Start the construction of XBRL corporate framework elements for the Santander Group, adapting to the 2007 and 2008 plans that will require: • Analyze all areas involved • Gradual implantation of the elements • Maximize the benefit for the users

  13. CC Holding CC Holding Geographic Scope. • Currently the geographic scope of the project is focused on organizations that reside in Spain, however the solution is being designed so that any organization can apply it if it be necessary, adhering to local regulatory body standards.

  15. Internal Information Exchange Santander Group is evaluating the possibility of using XBRL in their internal processes. The idea would be that the communications between systems could be carried out with XBRL. The processes of information exchange that are currently carried out between systems by means of plain text (or any other simple format) interfaces, would be done in XBRL. Advantages: • The language becomes unified internally. • All the systems / applications would be in disposition of communicating with the exterior without having a conversion process. • It improves validation processes of the sent information. Inconveniences: • High initial cost of transformation. • Complex technical solution for different platforms. • Possible impact in intermediates tools for exploiting information.
