  2. The Eucharist: Consecrated Host

  3. The Eucharist: The Holy Mass

  4. The Eucharist: Jesus Christ

  5. Catechism of the Catholic Church The Eucharist is the most sacred, most profound and highest form of worship wherein God is perfectly glorified and men are sanctified through Jesus.

  6. The entire history of salvation is present in the Eucharist and the Eucharist is present in the entire history of salvation. Just as on a clear morning the whole sky is reflected in a dewdrop on a bush so the Eucharist reflects the whole of the history of salvation. - Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa Papal Household Preacher 1980- Present

  7. The Eucharist is present in the Old Testament as a Figure or Type • It is present in the New Testament as an Event • It is present in our time, the time of the Church, as a Sacrament

  8. Figure, Event & Sacrament • A figure or type: anticipates and prepares the event • An event: a figure becomes a reality • A sacrament: renews, re-presents, and celebrates the event.

  9. Ancient Sacrifice

  10. Old Testament Sacrifices(Mentioned in Eucharistic Prayers) • Gen 4:2-4: Abel’s sacrifice of his first born lambs • Gen 22:13: Abraham’s sacrifice of a ram • Gen 14:17- 20: Melchizedek’s offering of bread and wine

  11. Melchizedek’s Sacrifice When Abram returned from his victory over Chedorlaomer and the kings who were allied with him, the king of Sodom went out to greet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine, and being a priest of God Most High, he blessed Abram with these words: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, the creator of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your foes into your hand.“ Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything. Gen 14:17- 20

  12. Abraham’s Sacrifice (Gen 22: 2) “Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you.” • (Mt 1:1) “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”

  13. Abraham’s Sacrifice (Genesis 22: 6- 8) “And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here am I, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.””

  14. God Tests Abraham Strong faith- essential to be the spiritual father of 3 great monotheistic religions God promised land and progeny + Left land of his ancestors to follow God’s call • Back Pocket Insurance (Heir) • Nephew Lot (Son of Haran) • Eliezer of Damascus (son of one of his slaves) • Ishmael (son of Sarah’s Egyptian maid Hagar • Greatest Gift from God– bring him closer to God or be a hindrance to his relationship with God?

  15. The Ten Commandments

  16. Passover • Hebrews became slaves in Egypt • Prayed for God’s help • God sent Moses • Pharaoh refused to free the Hebrews • God send 10 plagues • Passover Sacrifice

  17. Passover SacrificeExodus 12: 1- 23 • UNBLEMISHED LAMB • WITHOUT BROKEN BONES • HYSSOP BRANCH • EAT THE LAMB • LAMB RANSOMED FIRST BORN • DELIVERED FROM BONDAGE OF SLAVERY

  18. Passover Memorial(Anamnesis) (Gen 12:17) "Keep, then, this custom of the unleavened bread. Since it was on this very day that I brought your ranks out of the land of Egypt, you must celebrate this day throughout your generations as a perpetual institution.

  19. The Passover Sacrifice

  20. Temple Sacrifice (2 Chronicles 3: 1) “Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah.” • Completed around 960 BC • Destroyed by the Babylonians around 586 BC. • Rebuilt under the leadership of Nehemiah and Ezra around 536 BC • Massively Expanded and Renovated by King Herod around 19 BC • Destroyed by the Romans under Titus in 70 AD

  21. Temple Sacrifice Most Common Form: Peace offering or communion sacrifice Purpose: Reconcile a sinful person with God Natural Consequence of Sin: Separation from God, Others, One’s Own Self

  22. Communion • Common partaking of a meal is one of the deepest means of unity among Jews • Sharing a meal creates an exceedingly deep bond among all partakers • The bond is so strong you can never harm anyone who shares a meal with you • The Jews were scandalized that Jesus ate with sinners and tax collectors (“unrighteous”)

  23. Communion Sacrifice • Sinner approaches the altar with a lamb or a kid (young goat) • Sinner places his hands on the lamb to identify himself with the victim • “The life which is to be surrendered is my life” • Life is holy. Life= Blood. Therefore, blood is holy. • Sinner symbolically transfers his sins to the lamb • The lamb takes on and bears the sins • The lamb offers his life as a proxy for the sinner (unwilling sacrifice)

  24. Communion Sacrifice • Sinner slits the throat of the lamb and drains the blood in altar receptacles • Priest takes some of the blood and sprinkles it on and around the altar • Priest puts some of the flesh on top of holy fire

  25. Communion Sacrifice • Sinner eats some of the flesh while still edible • The flesh of the lamb is transformed into smoke and taken up to God • God receives his portion of the surrendered life • Sinner shares a meal with God

  26. Temple Layout

  27. Solomon’s Temple

  28. Holy of Holies • Separated from rest of the Temple by a veil • Only the high priests are permitted to enter • Enters only briefly and only once a year • Yom Kippur: Day of Atonement • High Priest takes the sacrificial offering of the people to God • High Priests are also sinners: unworthy to abide in God’s presence

  30. The Event: Paschal Mystery • Passion • Death • Resurrection

  31. Bread of Life (John 6: 47- 51) “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."

  32. Eat My Body. Drink My Blood. (John 6: 53- 58) Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him… whoever eats this bread will live forever."

  33. Bread of Life (John 6: 27) “Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” (John 6: 35) "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

  34. Grotto of the Nativity

  35. Many Disciples Left (John 6:66) “As a result of this, many (of) his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.”

  36. Leaven Metaphor (Matthew 16:6- 12) “Jesus said to them, “Look out, and beware of the leavenof the Pharisees and Sadducees.” They concluded among themselves, saying, “It is because we have brought no bread.” When Jesus became aware of this he said, …”How do you not comprehend that I was not speaking to you about bread?” … Then they understoodthat he was not telling them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

  37. We Have Come to Believe (John 6: 68- 69) "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God”

  38. Jesus the Passover Lamb (Isaiah 53: 7) “like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.” (John 1: 35- 36) “The next day John was there again with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God."”

  39. Lamb of God

  40. The Power of God’s Word (Genesis Chapter 1) “In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless wasteland… Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light…Then God said, "Let there be a dome in the middle of the waters…" And so it happened… Then God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered into a single basin...” And so it happened…Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth vegetation…" And so it happened…Then God said, "Let there be lights in the domeof the sky…" And so it happened… Then God said, "Let the water teem with an abundance of living creatures…" And so it happened… Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth all kinds of living creatures…" And so it happened…”

  41. The Last Supper(Eucharistic Prayer) “ Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you…Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.”

  44. The Crucifixion

  45. The CrucifixionJohn 19 • CRUCIFIED AT THE 6TH HOUR OF THE DAY OF PREPARATION • SEAMLESS LINEN TUNIC • NO BROKEN BONES • HYSSOP BRANCH • DELIVER FROM SPIRITUAL BONDAGE OF SIN AND DEATH

  46. Isaiah 53:4-6 Yet it was our infirmities that he bore, our sufferings that he endured, while we thought of him as stricken, as one smitten by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins; upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed. We had all gone astray like sheep, each following his own way; but the LORD laid upon him the guilt of us all.

  47. Jesus, The Lamb of God As he hangs upon the cross, Jesus takes on and bears our personal little sins and the sins of every single human person who has ever lived and will ever live! Jesus: The Willing Sacrifice!

  48. Natural Consequence of Sin As Jesus bears our sins, he experiences for the first time, the consequences of mortal sin—the complete separation from the Father. He feels the emptiness, pain, darkness and stark loneliness of that separation. He experiences the silence of God. He feels forsaken.

  49. Matthew 27:46 “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

  50. Jesus Dies on the Cross (Matthew 27: 50- 51) “But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and gave up his spirit. And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, rocks were split.”
