  4. WWF’s Marine Act Campaign • Nearly 10 years of campaigning • WWF’s ‘Draft Bill’ 2005 • UK Marine Bill currently in Parliament • Scottish Draft Marine Bill published April 2009

  5. Working in partnership • Wildlife Countryside Link • Major players: WWF, RSPB, The Wildlife Trusts, The Marine Conservation Society. • Supporter events including Parliamentary lobbies

  6. WWF Marine Act Campaign – top 4 asks • Fish don’t do politics – conservation zones shouldn’t either • Who’s the captain? The sea’s no place for weak and watery management • A wide enough net? All of our seas are important, not just the busy bits • Fishing for the future – conservation must be the new ‘catch’ word.

  7. Process and next steps • Process for working with Peers, MPs, Defra • Movement on key issues • Duty to designate, discussion on ‘ecological coherence’ • Planning for all waters • MMO statutory consultee of the IPC

  8. Implementation • Marine Act just the first step! • Stakeholder engagement will be crucial to success of the legislation • Implementation processes should engage stakeholders to ensure buy-in and ownership • Links to EU legislation

Partnerships in Stakeholder Engagement in the Celtic Sea EcoSystem (PISCES) • Ecosystem approach is a central tenet of EU legislation but no legally recognised definition • WWF UK project with WWF Spain and The Environment Council (partners in France and Ireland) • Develop understanding of the ecosystem approach
