Development of the Green Key Programme • 1994: Creation of Green Key Programme in Denmark • 1998: Adaptation of the Green Key Programme in France • 2002: Green Key became the 5th Programme of FEE • 2010: Green Key available for International Hotel Chains. • 2010: 21 countries involved in the Green Key Programme.

  5. Green Key Philosophy The Green Key, as other FEE programmes, aims at Environmental education: By rewarding tourism facilities, it decreases environmental impact of each overnight stay. It also contributes to train managers and staff to sustainable management. Lastly, and it is the largest target, the tourists are provided with environmental information.

  6. Green Key Criteria • Common core to every country • National adaptation • Validated by the International Steering Committee • Regular revision of the international criteria • Three sets of criteria: • Hotels (hostals, conference centre, holiday centre) • Campsites • Attractions

  7. Green Key Criteria • Environmental management • Guest information • Staff involvement • Water savings • Cleaning and washing • Waste • Energy savings • Foods • Indoor climate • Administration • Green activities • Parking areas / parks

Green Key in a New Country • National NGO as member of FEE • Establish a National Green Key Jury or Steering Committee and management procedures • Organisation of a Green Key workshop • Production of a set of national criteria based on the international criteria • Approval national criteria by ISC Green Key • Green Key pilot phase for selected tourism accommodations • Full implementation of Green Key

Green Key for International Hotel Chains • In countries where is no Green Key Program started by the national FEE member • The international hotel chain can sent in application to the international coordination of Green Key • Hotels of the chain must meet the international base line criteria • Audits under responsibility of the international coordination

FEE’s Global Forest Fund • Compensation tool provided by FEE • Concerns CO2 emissions from flight travels • Funds are distributed to projects involving children in tree planting activities • FEE/Green Key compensates for all its flight travels such as control visits, conferences and national operator meetings You are also welcome to compensate at: www.fee-international.org > Global Forest Fund
