  1. Today we will analyze the meaning of complex words using our knowledge of prefixes and base words. analyze= investigate What will we use today? What does analyze mean? What will we analyze today? What are we going to do today?

  2. What was the last movie preview that you saw? In the word preview, we have the prefix “pre” which means before. We all know that a preview comes BEFORE a movie. Preview means to view before.

  3. Complex words A base or a root word combined with an prefix and/or a suffix. Combined=put together

  4. Base Word: A word that can stand alone, but can change meanings when a prefix is added. Example: View I would like to view the movie at home. (watch) I would like to preview the movie at home. (watch before) What is a base word? Why is view a base word?

  5. Prefix: a word part that is added to the beginning of a base word to create a new word • Example: • We saw the preview for the new Transformers movie. • Non-Example: • When I went to watch the movie, I ordered a pretzel. What is a prefix? Why is “pre” a prefix in preview? Why is “pre” not a prefix in pretzel?

  6. Let’s look at some more prefixes….....Hemi =HalfSemi =Half

  7. Let’s look at some base words! • Arid • Sphere • Annual • Formal • Conscious • Circle • Sweet • Weekly

  8. Arid = Dry Semicircle The desert was completely arid, with no water in sight.

  9. Sphere = ball The Earth is shaped like a sphere.

  10. Annual = Yearly MAR 2009 Semicircle You have to file your taxes and pay your car registration on an annual basis.

  11. Formal = Proper Semicircle We had to wear formal attire for the prom.

  12. Conscious = Aware The owl remains conscious of its surroundings throughout the night.

  13. Circle = Round Shape All of the flags were made into circles on this page.

  14. Sweet = Sugary Lollipops, candies, and chocolates are usually sweet.

  15. Weekly=7 days I get my car washed weekly.

Why is it important to know how to analyze words? • It’s important to know how to analyze words so that: • we can understand the sentence • we can be better readers • we can read and write sentences correctly Why is it important to know how to analyze words?   17. How are we going to use prefixes? • Read the sentence. • Look at all of your choices. • Think about what each base word and prefix means. • Choose the word the BEST fits the sentence.
