Chapter 7 Problem 1a,b,c Used GrADS to plot the NNRP2 200mb geopotential height for Jan 1, 2002 The arrow is pointing at Four Corners. • The map above shows the heights in meters of the 200mb pressure level. • The average height of the 200mb pressure surface is approx. 12,000m. • The average height of the 850mb pressure surface is approx. 1,500m. • What is the height in meters of the 200mb pressure surface at Four Corners? • If the wind is geostrophic which force is excluded when determining wind speed and direction?

Chapter 7 Problems 2b,c • Which pressure, 925mb or 850mb, is closer to the earth’s surface? • What forces do we use near the surface to determine wind direction? • Wind speed generally increases with height. • Does wind diverge or converge around high pressure? Around low pressure? Does the wind circle clockwise or counter clockwise around a high? Around a low?

Think gradients. The tropics are always warm, but what about the high latitudes?

Chapter 7 Problem 10a,b • The H or L will be enclosed within a height contour line. • Think about which way the wind is blowing. • For part b, they are not thinking about time zones, just the duration of the flight. What might increase the amount of flight time, a headwind (wind direction nearly opposite flight direction)? A tailwind (wind and flight in same direction)?

  7. Graph on lined or graph paper or in Excel. When you graph, make sure axes are properly labeled. • For part a, does temperature in the troposphere usually increase or decrease with height? What is it called if it does something other than what’s usual? • In part a, you graph the environmental lapse rate. For part b, consider stability. If the parcel is warmer than the environment, that layer of the atmosphere is considered unstable and the parcel will continue to rise. • If the parcel is unsaturated use dry adiabatic lapse rate • If parcel is saturated use moist adiabatic lapse rate Chapter 8 Problem 6a,b
