  1. Why am I here? Introduction What will I talk about? - The science of Climate Change - The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) Who am I? - The Solution - My Successes Green Loans - Free Home Energy Assessment (90 Minutes) - Free Report - Interest free Loan Climate Change and the CPRS - Alan Cuthbertson February 2010

  2. The Science of Climate Change No atmosphere – 30 degrees colder CO2 contributes 6 degrees - Historical levels = 250 ppm CO2 is a Greenhouse Gas - Current levels = 390 ppm (+3 degrees) - Projected 2050 = 550 ppm (+6 degrees) It is much more complex, but all bad The full effect of current levels is still coming Climate Change and the CPRS - Alan Cuthbertson February 2010

  3. Tipping Points As Arctic Ice melts – absorbs more heat As Greenland Ice sheet melts - slips into the sea Arctic Tundra melts – releases methane Positive feedback – Runaway changes Bottom Line – We have no idea what we are doing Climate Change and the CPRS - Alan Cuthbertson February 2010

  4. Primary Problems Problems Secondary Problems Floods, Droughts, Water Shortages, Bushfires Rising Temperatures, Rising sea levels, Extremes of weather Food Shortage, Disease, Wars, Mass Migration How many people will die? 300,000,000 Climate Change and the CPRS - Alan Cuthbertson February 2010

  5. Carbon pollution Reduction Scheme Prices rise, people reduce usage Prices rise, renewable power becomes viable A Tax is equivalent to Cap & Trade A Cap and Trade System - Tax sets cost, Market sets Usage - Cap & Trade sets usage, Market sets cost $20 a Tonne (6 cents a litre) nothing happens $100 a Tonne (30 cents a litre) things happen Climate Change and the CPRS - Alan Cuthbertson February 2010

  6. Spending the Income Could give it all to people ($400 each) 50% to people - Payments to disadvantaged - Rebate on Petrol CPRS earns $8 billion a year ($20/tonne) 40% to Business - Compensation to Power Companies - Payments to Trade Exposed Industries 10% to mitigation Climate Change and the CPRS - Alan Cuthbertson February 2010

  7. Clean Coal Research At least 15 years away Not feasible under $40 a tonne In 30 years time, 70% will not be good enough At best , it delivers 70% reductions in emissions A stop gap measure. Can dig coal for another 10 years Better spent on renewables Climate Change and the CPRS - Alan Cuthbertson February 2010

  8. Problems with CPRS Agriculture/Forestry excluded Agriculture half in Stops Personal Endeavour Limited to Gas/Oil/Coal Locks in Mediocrity Based on Politically Acceptability, not Science Requires International Agreement Climate Change and the CPRS - Alan Cuthbertson February 2010

  9. Problems with Liberal policy Cannot deliver beyond 5% Sets no long term direction Agricultural savings difficult to measure Will not guarantee reductions No incentive to reduce petrol/electricity/gas Climate Change and the CPRS - Alan Cuthbertson February 2010

  10. Current Situation 25%/50% morally indefensible CPRS of limited value Book By David Spratt Global Agreement difficult to achieve Declare “Code Red” Consider Pearl Harbour Climate Change and the CPRS - Alan Cuthbertson February 2010

  11. Close Curtains in Winter at Sunset Open doors in Summer at Sunset Installed Solar Panels My Actions Reduce heater temperature from 18 to 17 Bought a Prius Use Fans rather than Air Conditioner Bought Zoned Ducted Heating Remove Shade sail at start of winter Bought a new Fridge Trim Shrubs at start of winter Installed a Water Tank Annual Savings Installed Solar Hot Water Installed Compact Fluorescent Globes Sealed holes in wall Gas - 60% reduction - $680 Seals around Windows Electricity - 37% reduction - $610 Seals around Doors Swapped dishwasher to Hot Water Petrol - 30% reduction - $1,100 Fixed insulation in Roof Installed Low Flow Shower Heads Water - 40% reduction - $200 Climate Change and the CPRS - Alan Cuthbertson February 2010

  12. Summary Climate Change is Man Made Climate Change is Deadly Cannot wait for World Agreement Must go on to a War Footing Climate Change is Real Need 50% reduction in 15 years, 90% in 40 years, 110% in 50 years Cuts must be Real, not Offsets (indulgences) We can make a Difference Get a Free Home assessment And a Green Loan to fix your house!
