  2. Definitions…. • Stitch: • Specific configuration of thread • Stitching: • Series of stitches used to finish the edges or for decorative purpose • Seam: • The line where two or more plies of material are attached

  4. Stitch Types… • Basically there are two types of stitches • Lock Stitch • Chain Stitch

  5. Stitch formation methods… • There are three stitch formation methods • Inter-lacing • One thread passes over or around another thread or loop of another thread (e.g. L / S) • Inter-looping • Passing of a loop from another loop of another thread (e.g. Over-edging, Cover stitch) • Intra-looping • Passing of a loop from another loop of the same thread (e.g. Blind Stitch)

  6. Stitch Types… • There are six basic types of stitches according to ASTM standards. These types are called Classes • Class 100 Single thread Chain stitch (5) • Class 200 Hand Stitch (5) • Class 300 Lock stitch (16) • Class 400 Multi thread Chain stitch (7) • Class 500 Over-edging (22) • Class 600 Cover stitch (7)

  7. Sewing machines… • Sewing machines are always designed on the basis of these stitch types • Lock Stitch • Over-lock / Safety • Interlock / Flat-lock

  8. Lock stitch vs Chain-stitch • Thread consumption • Strength • Stability • Speed • Downtime (Machine Delay) • Lower thread (Bobbin, Loopers)
