  5. PC RORC DDL- DIU DDL-SIU detector electronics Detector Data Link (DDL) • The DDL will be installed between the detectors and the front-end computers. • The DDL is an integral part of the ALICE data acquisition system. • The DDL provides up to 200 MB/s bandwidth. • The DDL consists of three parts: • Destination Interface Unit (DIU):on the front-end computers  connected via the RORC (pRORC or HLT-RORC) • Multi-mode optical fiber cable:to bridge up to 200 meters, full duplex LC connector • Source Interface Unit (SIU):on the detector electronics  connected to the RCU (prototype 1, 2, 3) TPC collaboration meeting, 2-3 June 2003

  6. DDL hardware DDL-DIU with pRORC Fiber cable (5 meters) pcald09.cern.ch: • PII@300Mhz • 256 SDRAM • 2x 40 GB disk • Fast Ethernet • RH 7.3.2 DDL-SIU This system is ready for operation! TPC collaboration meeting, 2-3 June 2003

  8. Towards the final DAQ • More realistic setup with respect to installations at Test Beams or at Point 2: • Data stream over a long distance • Electronics can be controlled remotely • PC with LabView is not necessary • High bandwidth upstream and downstream • Scalable to more RCUs and FECs • Early integration of front-end electronics with theALICE data acquisition system • All components are ready • DAQ milestone #388 of ALICE TPC collaboration meeting, 2-3 June 2003

  9. DATE • The Data Acquisition and Test Environment is the software framework of the ALICE DAQ. • It runs on Linux platforms. • The latest release is V4.6  user’s guide available • Well tested (test beams, data challenges) • Services/Packages: • System configuration • Run Control • Readout for DDL • Event Building • Event Recording • Messaging system • Performance monitoring TPC collaboration meeting, 2-3 June 2003

  11. PC RORC DDL- DIU DDL-SIU detector electronics FeC2 • The DDL is capable to Control and Configure the Front-end electronics  integration with the ECS • Protocols are defined for 4 basic transactions: • Sending commands (19 bits information) • Reading status (19 bits address, 19 bits reply) • Sending data blocks (19 bits address, file to send) • Reading data blocks (19 bits address, file to read) • Interpreter is implemented for executing scripts • Example of a FeC2 script: FeC2 define THRESHOLDS /local/thresholds.data write_block 0x600 THRESHOLDS read_and_check_block 0x600 THRESHOLDS stop_if_failed -1 write_command 0x1ff stop TPC collaboration meeting, 2-3 June 2003

  12. Data Quality Monitor MOOD Using data of TPC sector test z distance (no cluster finding) Total charge Event size distribution Time projections • ROOT based • Offline: files • Online: DATE TPC collaboration meeting, 2-3 June 2003

  13. Working steps • Installation of PCs with Linux and DATE: • 1 PC with 2 DDLs for Hall 167 • 1 PC with 1 DDL for the TPC lab • Integration DATE  DDL RCU in the TPC lab • Stable data stream with high performance • Control&configuration of the final RCU prototype via DDL and FeC2 • Integration of the full DAQ chain in Hall 167 • Installing the PC and the 2 DDLs • Configuration • Test runs • Production runs • Online Monitoring • Analysis TPC collaboration meeting, 2-3 June 2003

  14. Summary • A planned DAQ setup by using the DLL for the TPC sector test in Hall 167 has been presented. • Hardware/software components of the new DAQ : • Hardware: • DDL: SIU, DIU, fiber cables • RORC: pRORC, HLT-RORC • RCU: prototype 1, 2, 3 • PC: Linux, disks, networking • Software: • DATE: readout, recording, services • FeC2: control/configure the front-end electronics • MOOD: data quality monitoring • Online monitoring software can be reused • Let’s start the work!
