  1. Dumbarton Middle Mathematics Information Night We will be using slido.com for questions during the presentation. -Type slido.com into your browser -Enter event code: #F625 -Start asking!! You can vote for your favorite questions throughout the night. Kristi M. Ninos, Department chair kninos@bcps.org

  2. Meeting outcomes: During this meeting, we will: Identify the core purpose of mathematics education at the middle school level Describe the importance of Algebra 1 and it’s implication for graduation Address selection criteria for 2019-2020 scheduling decisions Time is allotted for Q&A by DMS math faculty at the end of the presentation

  3. The Dumbarton Math Team 6th grade: Mr. Lovett, Mr. Lynch, Mr. Hegmann, Mr. Sievers 7th grade: Mr. Taylor, Mr. Sievers, Ms. Noppinger, Mr. Wood 8th grade: Mr. Russell, Ms. Sharbonda, Ms. Noppinger, Ms. Ninos

  4. Our Vision: Who are we? BCPS Office of Mathematics PreK-12 The middle school mathematics curriculum continues to Build the Foundation by capitalizing on students' strengths and interests to introduce them to how mathematics can be used as a tool and a language in the various STEM and Humanities fields. The high school mathematics curriculum provides time to Fortify the Foundation by solidifying students' readiness for post secondary mathematics courses and opportunities that rely on a strong understanding and application of mathematical concepts and skills. 6. Algebra 1 Graduation Requirements 1: http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/programs/Documents/Testing/GraduationsRequirements2018.pdf 2: http://www.dsd.state.md.us/comar/comarhtml/13a/13a.03.02.03.htm • Pass Algebra 1 PARCC1 • Current 8th graders will need a passing score of 725 • Current 6th & 7th graders will need a passing score of 750 • Enroll in a mathematics course in each year of high school2 • three credits, including one with instruction in algebra aligned with the Maryland High School Assessment for algebra or one or more credits in subsequent mathematics courses for which algebra is a prerequisite, and one with instruction in geometry aligned with the content standards for geometry’ • Take mathematics PARCC exam aligned with course enrollment in their 9th grade year.

  7. Algebra 1 Curriculum • Linear FunctionsQuantities and RelationshipsGraphs, Equations, Linear Functions, and InequalitiesAnalyzing Data Sets for Two Quantitative VariablesSystems of Linear Equations and Inequalities • Quadratic FunctionsGraphs of Quadratic FunctionsPolynomial Expressions and Solving Quadratic Equations • Exponential FunctionsSequences and the Graphs of Linear and Exponential Functions • Other FunctionsPiecewise and Step Functions • Data AnalysisAnalyzing Data Sets for One VariableAnalyzing Data Sets for Two Categorical Variables

  8. Homework Assigned, not scored, for practice Yes! We still assign homework. • Math 6 → Mon & Weds • GT 6 → preview reading & notes • PreAlgebra→ 3x a week • Algebra 1 (GT7 and 8th grade) → 4-5x a week with graded assignments.

  9. Implications for Scheduling How do we make decisions on scheduling? • Incoming 6th graders • Based on 5th grade teacher recommendations • Current students • Current & previous MAP scores* • Previous PARCC scores • Student progress, reviewed twice during the school year • Includes in-class assignments

  10. Implications for Scheduling 7th Grade: PreAlgebra vs. Algebra 1 • GT7: Algebra 1 • Same course as 8th graders and 9th graders take • PARCC • PreAlgebra 7 • “Accelerated” pace – covers 1.5 years of content in one year • Emphasis on building capacity for algebraic thinking, proportional reasoning • Additional Assistance elective offered: Students selected by 6th grade teachers; identified as strong in 6th grade but may benefit from additional support for rigor of 7th grade

  11. Implications for Scheduling 8th Grade: Math 8, Algebra 1, Geometry • Algebra 1 readiness: • MAP score 235 (+/-) or higher • PARCC score of “3” or higher • GT8: Geometry • Follows course progression per BCPS • Successful completion of Algebra 1 in 7th grade • Algebra 1 • PARCC requirement fulfilled • Opportunity to enroll for Advance Academics available* • Math 8 • Covers first unit of Algebra 1 • Revisits statistics and geometry • Emphasis on advancing algebraic thinking • Preparation for success in Algebra 1 and beyond

  12. Thank you for coming! Q&A Time Please take time to talk with our teachers if you have further questions. Have a fantastic evening!
