Background 4. The Finished Product Despite advances in surgical techniques shoulder and arm complications following breast cancer surgery are common. Some women follow hospital exercise leaflets or the Breast Cancer Care DVD aimed at preventing/ameliorating symptoms. Following a successful pilot study of a yoga programme designed for women post surgery, we produced a structured DVD to test in a Randomised Controlled Trial. Disc 1: Introduction explaining why women with breast cancer have surgery to the axilla; a short guide on how to prepare for yoga; a step by step guide on how to do each pose (levels 1-3). 2. Development of the DVD • Members of Brighton Breast Cancer Support Group (BBCSG) suggested we made a yoga DVD for them • Primary aim :- appropriateness of the DVD for women of varied ages, shapes, flexibility & fitness • Development team included: breast cancer surgeon, yoga teacher, physiotherapist, members of BBCSG & researcher. Production was a complex process to ensure finished product was informative & user friendly Disc 2: an hour long class of yoga with the BBCSG volunteers, performing all the poses. 3. Filming • Filming the class took 2 days plus another day to film the yoga teacher perform each of the 18 poses at 3 levels of difficulty • Members of the BBCSG took part in the class DVD 5. Evaluation of the DVD in a randomised trial • Study started 01/05/2011 • 100 women with breast cancer having axillary surgery • ▼ • Randomised 1:1 • Standard hospital exercises – Breast Cancer Care • Home based yoga DVD – • Shown how to use DVD & follow Level 1 poses by the yoga teacher • Asked to use the DVD at least once a week for 10 weeks at Level 1 • Given yoga mat and blocks to use during intervention period • Assessments: 3 time points • Baseline (2-14 days post op); 12 weeks & 6 mths post op • Quality of Life/Shoulder & Arm Questionnaires • FACT B+4; QuickDash; Oxford Shoulder Score • Diary of practise & DVD evaluation Objective measures Physiotherapy assessment at baseline and 12 weeks Shoulder movement; grip strength; Forearm circumference measurement Standard hospital exercises + home based yoga DVD or Standard hospital exercises The chart shows study status up until October 1st 2012 .
