  2. Antics • Ridiculous and unpredictable behavior (noun) • synonym: pranks The crowd at the zoo was entertained by the monkey’s antics.

  3. Avowed(adj.) • Declare openly and without shame • Synonyms: admitted, sworn • Antonyms: undisclosed, unacknowledged The avowed music lover never missed a concert.

  4. Banter • To exchange playful remarks or tease (verb) • Talk that is playful and teasing (noun) Synonyms: chitchat, joking Antonyms: serious talk The friends joked and bantered for hours at parties. Lighthearted banter can make a serious situation less awkward.

  5. Bountiful • Giving freely, generous, plentiful (adj.) • Synonyms: abundant, liberal • Antonyms: scarce, in short supply On Thanksgiving Day, we ate a bountiful feast with several side dishes and desserts.

  6. Congested • Overcrowded, filled or occupied to excess (adj.) • Synonyms: jammed, packed • Antonyms: uncluttered, clear The highway was so congested with traffic that we were an hour late to work.

  7. Detriment • Harm or loss; injury, damage (noun) Synonyms: liability, disadvantage Antonyms: advantage, help All of the penalties were a detriment to the team because they lost the game.

  8. Durable • Sturdy, not easily worn out or destroyed; lasting a long time (adj.) • Goods used repeatedly over time (noun) Synonyms: long-lasting, enduring (adj.) Antonyms: fragile, perishable (adj.) Steel is a durable material that is used for cars, construction, and tools. Furniture and appliances are durables because they last a long time.

  9. Enterprising • Energetic; starting something new; showing boldness and imagination Synonyms: ambitious Antonyms: lazy Bill Gates has an enterprising spirit, and he is now one of the richest people in America.

  10. Frugal • Economical, avoiding waste and luxury; poor (adj.) Synonyms: thrifty Antonyms: wasteful Caroline was frugal with her spending so that she was able to save for her retirement.

  11. Gingerly • With extreme care and caution; cautiously (adv.) Synonym: cautiously Antonym: confidently The family walked gingerly across the rocky riverbed.

  12. Glut • To feed or fill to the point of overstuffing (verb) • An oversupply (noun) Synonym: flood (verb); surplus (noun) Antonym: shortage (noun) Some restaurants glut their customers with too much bread before a meal. (verb) There was a glut of steak, but Homer Simpson ate it all. (noun)

  13. Incognito • In a disguised state, under an assumed name or identity (adj.) Synonym: disguise Justin Bieber had to travel incognito to avoid getting mobbed by fans.

  14. Invalidate • To make valueless, take away all force or effect (verb) Synonym: cancel Antonym: confirm The store owner invalidated the transaction when someone tried to use a fake credit card.

  15. Legendary • Described in well-known stories; existing in old stories or legends rather than real life (adj.) Synonym: mythical, famous Superman is a legendary superhero who fights to save the world.

  16. Maim • To cripple, disable, injure, disfigure, or mutilate (verb) Falling down a mountain can harm, or even maim, a person for life.

  17. Minimize • To make as small as possible (verb) Synonym: belittle Antonym: magnify We all need to minimize our distractions to focus on the most important tasks.

  18. Oblique • Slanting or sloping; not direct (adj.) Synonym: indirect, diagonal Antonym: direct, straight to the point We didn’t walk straight; we went in an oblique direction through the field.

  19. Veer • To change direction or course suddenly, turn aside, shift, swerve (verb) To avoid an accident, the car had to veer off the road.

  20. Venerate • To regard with reverence; look up to with great respect (verb) Synonyms: worship, respect Antonyms: despise, ridicule It is important to venerate the people who have served to protect our country.

  21. Wanton • A spoiled pampered person; one with low morals (noun) • Reckless, heartless (adj.) Synonym: spiteful (adj.) Antonym: responsible (adj.) The superhero tried to protect us from the villain’s wanton behavior. Some people think Kim Kardashian is a wanton because she loves to shop.
