  3. What is a Podcast? A podcast is an audio or digital recording made available on the Internet for downloading to a personal audio player. • New Oxford American Dictionary by Margaret Lion for P200

  4. Great. So what does all that mean? • Think magazine: • A podcast is each issue • Podcasting is receiving the series automatically • So if you subscribe to a podcast, the electronic files of the podcast reach you automatically through software on your computer. by Margaret Lion for P200

Example of Podcasting - Audio PotterCast: The Harry Potter Podcast • Go to: http://www.podcastalley.com/podcast_details.php?pod_id=8633 • Click on LISTEN under ACTIONS • A new window will open and you will hear the latest podcast. • (Note: Listen carefully to the beginning for a special surprise.) by Margaret Lion for P200

  6. Subscribing to a Podcast You can subscribe to a podcast. This means that any time the podcast creators add a new file, you will be able to receive it. You can receive and save the podcast files on your computer or a portable media player such as an iPod. Remember that both the PotterCast and the National Geographic podcasts had subscribe links. by Margaret Lion for P200

Feed (RSS, Atom): The technology that allows people to subscribe to a podcast. It is a simple file containing the data needed to describe and access the podcast. by Margaret Lion for P200

  8. Important Podcasting Terms, Continued From Podcasting: The Basics by IU IT Training Podcatcher/Aggregator: Software that allows a user to collect and disseminate content in one place. Software such as iTunes is a podcatcher. Visit http://www.podcatchermatrix.org for more podcatcher software. iPod: A portable media player made by Apple. However, owning an iPod is NOT necessary to create or listen to podcasts by Margaret Lion for P200

  9. Your Projects in P200 Create both audio and video podcasts Create audio podcasts using Audacity Create video podcasts using Windows Movie Maker 2.6 Note: Files created in the above software must be converted to proper file types for podcasting by Margaret Lion for P200

  10. Podcast File Types • Audio • Files must be in .mp3 format • Video • Files must in .mp4 format Files MUST be in the above formats to work as podcast files. by Margaret Lion for P200

  11. Podcast File Types - Conversion The programs you use to create your audio and video files in P200 do not automatically create .mp3 or .mp4 files. You will need to convert the files into .mp3 or .mp4. by Margaret Lion for P200

  12. Podcast File Types – Conversion - Audio You will use the program Audacity to create your audio files. Audacity files have the .aup extension. Audacity can convert the .aup file into .mp3. This will be the last step you take for creating your file in Audacity. by Margaret Lion for P200

  13. Podcast File Types – Conversion - Video You will use Windows Movie Maker to create video. Windows Movie Maker creates .MSWMM files. It cannot create .mp4 files. Windows Movie Maker can convert files to .wmv. You will then convert the .wmv file by uploading it to a site that will perform the conversion for you. by Margaret Lion for P200

  14. Needed Tools You will use the software Audacity and Windows Movie Maker 2.6. You are advised to save your work on your USB sticks. My Workspace may not be able to hold the files. You can also zip your files to save storage space. Zipped files can be saved in My Workspace. by Margaret Lion for P200
