  1. Chemistry The Classification of Matter

  2. Some Definitions • Pure Substance: A substance that is made up of only one type of particle. i.e Distilled water • Tap water has dissolved gases in it. • Mixture: Contains more than one type of particle • Solid mixture -> cell phone, cereal • Liquid mixture -> tea, juice • Gas mixture -> air

  3. Types of Mixtures • Mechanical Mixture: You can distinguish between different types of matter. i.e. granola bar & pizza. • Solutions: A uniform mixture of two or more substances. i.e. clear apple juice. • Note: All liquid and gas solutions are clear! If a liquid or gas mixture appears murky or opaque, it is a mechanical mixture. • Alloy: A solid solution of two or more metals. • i.e. Bronze -> Copper + Tin

  4. Classification of Matter MATTER PURE SUBSTANCES MIXTURES Can combine to form ELEMENTS i.e: H, O, C COMPOUNDS i.e: H2O, NaCl SOLUTIONS i.e: H2O + salt MECHNICAL MIXTURES i.e: H2O + raisins
