Social DimensionsEssential to Development • Though global opportunities are abundant, too many people lack capabilities to tap into them. • To address this problem, development must deal with economic, human, environmental and social dimensions such as culture, values, and norms • Generally, development works better when it promotes social change towards more • Inclusion • Cohesion • Accountability These are the principles of social development • These principles overlap with other approaches • Health, education and social protection focus on human capital • Other operational approaches focus on formal institutions
World Bank Support to Social Development • World Bank accepts and supports global consensus that social development matters • It has started to incorporate social development into how it operates • Public statements • Investment projects involve e.g., social analysis, participation, accountability. • There is growing evidence that attention to social institutions strengthens portfolio (OED) • Enhances results • Mitigates risks
Objective: Support inclusive, cohesive and accountable institutions throughout Bank operations.
