What properties of carbon explain carbon’s ability to form different large and complex structures? 1b. Carbon atoms can bond to the atoms of many other elements. Carbon atoms can also readily bond to one another to form short chains, long chains, or rings, and these bonds can be single, double, or triple covalent bonds. This means that carbon atoms can be combined to make millions of different types of structures.
