This program will run for 6 weeks on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m., at the Twin Falls County Extension Office, 246 3rd Avenue East in Twin Falls. Enjoy Apples To celebrate National Apple Month in October • Red , green or golden, apples are one of the ultimate easy, tasty, good-for-you snacks. • You know the saying about an apple a day; there is some truth to it. Apples contain vitamin C and plenty of fiber with only about 80 calories in a medium size. • Fall is apple season and a great time to pick your own. Use extras to make a quick applesauce • Easy Applesauce • Ingredients: • 7 apples½ cup water¼ cup sugar • Directions: • Wash and peel apples, then cut apples in quarters, remove core. • Combine apples and water in saucepan. Heat to boiling. Turn heat to low as soon as the water is boiling. • Simmer over low heat for 15-20 minutes or until apples are tender. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. • Stir in sugar and heat until sugar is dissolved. Servings 8 • Variations: • Additional sugar can be added to increase sweetness. Brown sugar can be used instead of white. • Serving suggestions: • Add 1 tablespoon cinnamon and stir before serving. • Nutritional Analysis (per serving) • Calories: 88 Fat: 0 grams • Fall Fitness Tips • Take advantage of the weather. Fall can be a treat for the senses: the crisp air, apple picking, pumpkin carving, beautiful fall colors, and the crunch of leaves underfoot. These months are a great time to exercise outdoors and enjoy cooler temperatures. Walking, hiking and cycling are all great in the fall. Get out and play volleyball, throw the Frisbee around, or play a vigorous game of fetch with your dog. And remember, it doesn’t have to seem like exercise to be a great workout. Raking leaves or doing some fall outdoor yard work is a great way to get the heart pumping and calories burning. • Be an active TV watcher. Many people get geared up for fall premieres of their favorite television shows. If you’re going to sit down and watch fall premieres and football games, get moving. While you watch, you can walk or run in place, do standing lunges, or lift weights. During commercials, do push-ups or sit-ups. In a one-hour show, you probably have close to 20 minutes worth of commercial interruption. • Integrate exercise into your life. Park farther away from your destination; take stairs instead of elevators; take a walk during your lunch break. If you’re spending the afternoon taking kids to soccer practice, instead of reading a book or visiting with another parent, why not walk around the outside of the field while they practice.
