  4. Definitions • What is a Job Coach? A Job Coach (or employment specialist) is a person who provides the support you need to keep a job in the community. • What is Job Coaching? Job coaching refers to the training of a supported employee using structured intervention techniques to help them learn to perform job tasks to the employer's specifications and interpersonal skills in the workplace.

  5. When is the best time to start coaching? At the intake meeting…. - Include questions about how to disclose during interview process - Discuss how to explain who coach is at the work place - Ask about destabilizing issue or issues - Interviewing, do you go in and who answers the questions

  6. When do coach and job seeker meet?

  7. On the job: - Get a job description when possible - Have a plan set before starting - Let the trainer be the lead - Encourage the individual to ask questions of co-workers - Observe and assist with workplace culture - Assist with work tasks - Be sure to encourage worker and provide feedback. - Dress for the place you are working

  9. Be Careful……. • Don’t be the messenger • Encourage the employee to interact with coworkers • Use role playing with individuals to help them learn • Don’t start the job without your individual

  10. Extended Supports • On-going encouragement/feedback • Do you still need contact with boss? • On-site vs. off-site coaching • Natural Supports • Don’t stop people from doing their job
