  3. TB the Bigger Picture • 1/3 of world’s population infected !! (2.3 billion people) • 1.700,000 deaths (2009) • one person newly infected with TB every second !! • 1 in 10 (10%) of infected (HIV negative) become sick or infectious at some point in their life (source WHO Fact Sheet 2011)

  4. TB the Bigger Picture • Of the 1.7 million death, 380,000 HIV+ • Majority of deaths in 3rd world – more than half in Asia • TB the leading killer in those with HIV • 9.4 million new cases in 2009 – 80% in 22 countries (source WHO Fact Sheet 2011)

  5. TB the Bigger Picture • Among the 25 countries with the highest estimated TB rates, 13 are in Africa • 1/3 of all new cases are in India & China • MDR-TB is in virtually all countries • 440,000 new cases 2008 • 50% in China, India, Russia (source WHO Fact Sheet 2011)
