The Instructional Core: Teacher • Knowledge of subject matter • Beliefs about whether one’s practice will lead to increased performance • Use of data to accomplish organizational goals • Personal beliefs and perceptions about the student • Knowledge of the learning process • Understanding of and “buy in” to organization’s instructional goals.

  6. The Instructional Core: Students • Social group membership • Perception of school and schooling • Organization and presentation of academic content • Teacher beliefs and expectations • Racial, cultural, and ethnic identity • Prior knowledge

  7. The Instructional Core: Content • “Students’ academic work in school is defined by the academic tasks embedded in the content they encounter on a daily basis.” • “Students will learn what a task leads them to do...” (Doyle, 1983).
