  2. 1. What roll did women have in the fight for independence? 1. Women took over their husbands businesses. Some women, such as Margaret Corbin and Molly Pitcher followed their husbands into battle.

  3. 2. Why did African American fight for the British? Americans? 2. The African American’s fought for the British because they would be freed. The African Americans needed money, so they fought for the British also.

  4. Describe the conditions at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-1778 3. At Valley Forge they suffered from lack of food, clothing, and shelter. Most of the men got diseases and died later in the winter.

  5. How did each of the following help the fight for independence? 4. • Marquis de Lafayette- Lafayette helped by joining the Continental Army and talked the French into joining sides with the Patriots. • Friedrich von Steuben- Steuben trained the Continental Army so that they would be ready to fight against the British. • Juan de Miralles- Miralles helped talk Cuba, Mexico, and Spain into sending financial aid to the Continental Army. • Bernando de Galvez- Galvez was a very important man who forced the British from Baton Rouge. • Phyllis Wheatley- Wheatley was an African American taken into slavery by the Americans. She wrote a very important poem for the patriots: “Proceed, great chief, With virtue on thy side, Thy ev’ry action Let the goddess guide. A crown, a mansion, And a throne that shine, With gold unfading, WASHINGTON! be thine.”
