  1. Corporal Punishment Does it Belong in Schools Today?

  2. Why this subject? • A law suit was filed in Texas over Corporal Punishment in September 2012. • Person of the same sex must deliver the punishment. • Law suit was lost. • School district rescinded this rule.

  3. 20 States still allow Corporal Punishment to be used in public schools. • Corporal Punishment is meted out to boys and girls both. • Over 223,000 students were punished in the year 2008. • That’s only 1,200 students a day. • There are over 11 million students in the 100 largest school districts in the nation.

  4. THEORIES • Only states with large minority populations use it. • States that employ it are run by backward thinking people. • States with right-wing agendas use corporal punishment to control the young population.

  5. DISADVANTAGES • Corporal punishment lowers self esteem • Corporal punishment leads to abuse • Corporal punishment is degrading • Corporal punishment is psychologically damaging • Corporal punishment does not deter wrong doing

  6. ADVANTAGES • Deters students from bad behavior. • Teaches discipline • No suspensions • Relieves the parents from leaving work • No interruptions in learning

  9. Conclusion • Corporal Punishment has been proven to instill discipline in students. • Corporal Punishment does deter wrong doing. • We need to instill respect for our elders, teachers and those in authority in our youth.

  10. Corporal Punishment can be psychologically damaging. • But not due to the delivered spanking, but due to how children treat the student who was disciplined. • Corporal Punishment may not be the answer we’re looking for, but it has worked in the past.
