  5. CERN contributions as presented on LARP Budget Proposal • Minimum CERN contribution (4.47 M US$ in US accounting) • Kicker prototype • Pick-up • Infrastructure and Integration (cabling, interfaces LLRF/software, vacuum etc.) • Optional CERN contributions (negotiable) • Power amplifier, high power components • Spares • Diagnostics, monitoring • LARP core contribution: Signal processing 16.7 MUS$ without CERN contribution, 12.3 MUS$ with CERN contribution W. Hofle @LIU Meetings 12 June 2013

  6. CERN contributions as presented by W.H. • Accelerator Physics Support: Simulations, integration studies for implementation in SPS (optics, aperture, impedance) • Coordination, interface for potential contributions in Europe (for example kicker hardware from INF – Frascati) • Project fully integrated within LHC Injector Upgrade Project (LIU) • Engineering (FPGA and electronics development) • Pick-up design and construction • Fabrication of final system, vacuum structures, electronics • Integration of components, vacuum testing, tunnel infra-structure, cabling • Integration with Control System • Machine Developments, Commissioning W. Hofle @LIU Meetings 12 June 2013

  8. Kicker Location News – Tunnel Space in LSS3 • Short (array of) striplines, slotted wave guides, cavities ? • Location: dispersion supressor, flat vacuum chamber • Frequency reach < 1.5 GHz • Cabling / Infra-structure being prepared in LS1 (2013/2014) Low attenuation, low dispersion “smooth-wall” coax-cables 7/8” installed in May 2013 W. Hofle @LIU Meetings 12 June 2013

  9. Hofle @LIU Meetings 12 June 2013

  10. Summary • SPS can profit from High Bandwidth Transverse Feedback in a number of ways: 25 ns and 50 ns upgrade variants (TMCI, ECI), and during scrubbing (scrubbing beam !) • Interest and potential applications in PS and LHC  SPS is also a test-bed • CERN committed to upgrade transverse feedbacks and high bandwidth transverse feedback in injectors within LIU Project frame • 2012 / 2013 Beam Tests with SLAC developed demonstrator hardware successful: Feedback loop closed with 3.2 GS/s digitization using a single bunch  confidence in digital technology • Full exploration of demonstrator with beam requires new hardware be put in place to overcome bandwidth limitations of present kicker  down selection of kicker options ongoing, infrastructure put in place for installation of new kickers as early as at end of LS1, power amplifiers • New pick-up design launched at CERN • Full bandwidth tests in SPS between LS1 and LS2 mandatory to propose such a system for LHC as well as the final implementation for the SPS W. Hofle @LIU Meetings 12 June 2013

  11. Comments and recommendations from Reviewers • Management structure, put something written in place • Schedule for LS1 critical for kicker installation • Explore synergy with BNL • Kicker impedance and beam induced power  study where it goes • Would developed kicker be compatible with PS, LHC ? • Integration with CERN LLRF (synchronisation) and CERN software needs more attention • Manpower adequate or excessive ? • Recommend to switch from evaluation boards in electronics to hardware produced by project team W. Hofle @LIU Meetings 12 June 2013

  12. Observations by W.H. • Discussion on 11T Dipole emerged, clarification will be asked from CERN • Time Line shows that decisions points ahead (HL to become fully funded project only in the future under new CERN directions, needs 6.5-7 TeV running results to make decision • In absence of full CERN commitment to HL, need for some interim agreement • Budget in US only clear for 2014, 2015, but 2015 is very difficult • Additional support on top of flat-flat funding can only come from within labs by re-directing resources (man power) to LARP activities, DOE instructed labs to do so • Will accumulate schedule shift if funds are not available in US as asked W. Hofle @LIU Meetings 12 June 2013

  13. CERN Review for Feedback Project: Status of Planning • Overview, charge of review (Wolfgang + Brennan) • Beam Parameters overview (Giovanni ? Incl. LHC ?) • Simulations (Kevin) • Optics and Aperture constraints for pick-up and Kicker (Hannes) • PU design and receiver (GerdKotzian) • Kicker Design (John Cesaratto) • Kicker and Pickup Fabrication (Eric) • Synchronisations and time of flight compensation (Daniel Valuch) • Technology choices for ADCs/DACs/FPGAs (Tom Levens) • CERN Controls (Andy ?) • SLAC / LARP contributions • INFN – LFN contributions • Close-out, recommendations W. Hofle @LIU Meetings 12 June 2013
