  2. Workshop Goals • Meet some fellow students • Learn about academics at Evergreen • Intro to academic planning resources

  3. Get acquainted Share some info about yourself: • Name, home town • One talent you have, award you’ve won, or volunteer experience you’ve had • Why you chose to come to Evergreen • What you’re enrolled in for fall

  4. College is different from high school • Only 15-20 hours/week in class; up to 30+ hours/week of studying outside of class • Few or no reminders about deadlines, tests, assignments; you must check syllabus • More, and harder, reading and writing assignments • Just reading is not enough—you must also analyze, critique, question the texts • “Teaching” ≠ “Telling you the material” • More at “How Evergreen is Different From High School”

  5. Evergreen is different from other colleges • No majors (but you can create area of emphasis) • More info at “Designing an Area of Emphasis” • No required courses • No grades—instead you receive narrative evaluations • Most students take one program per quarter, rather than several classes

Programs: 16 credits (usually) Only take one program in a quarter Often team-taught Interdisciplinary 2 or 3 quarters long (usually) Weekdays daytime (usually) Classes: 4 credits (usually) Can take several classes in the same quarter Taught by a single faculty Single subject/discipline Single quarter long Evenings or weekends (usually) Programs vs. Classes

  8. Evaluations at Evergreen • Faculty evaluation of student • What you did • How well you did • Student evaluation of faculty • We value your voice and your input • Student self-evaluation • What did I learn? • What skills did I develop? • How have my overall learning goals changed?

Your Evergreen transcript contains: • Program/course evaluations, which include: • Description of program content and activities • Faculty evaluation of student • Breakdown of credits by subject • Your Academic Statement (in final version of transcript) • Cover sheet showing credit summary Sample transcript

Degree requirements • Bachelor of Arts • 180 credits and completed Academic Statement • 85-90% of Evergreen graduates earn BA • Bachelor of Science • 180 credits and completed Academic Statement • 72 in math/science/comp sci • 48 of those 72 at upper division level • Combined BA/BS • 225 credits and completed Academic Statement • Same math/science as for BS

  13. Quick tips for success • Use your syllabus to plan your quarter. • Do readings before class. • Contact the faculty if you need to miss class. • Problems? Act early, before they become major issues. • Campus offices and resources are here to help you; don’t hesitate to use them!
