  1. The music that is used thought-out the opening titles is played on strings which gives it an eerie feel. This tells us that the genre is a thriller. The music has a quirky feel to it which indicates the lead character shown on screen could be a eccentric character. Sound effects are also key - they add more emphasis to moments such as the crushing of the orange. The music also makes the actions feel more sinister. The typography used highlights the blood, also shown from the mosquito being killed at the beginning, lets the audience know that in this show there will be themes of death and killings. The colour of the writing also gets darker and spreads through the text, this represents blood and how it could possible flow out of his victims. The use of the over the shoulder shot, looking into the mirror builds tension for the viewer. It is forcing the focus onto the on the blurred image in the mirror to highlight that we know nothing about this man yet. The extreme close up of his finger running along his neck is disturbing because the liquid on his fingers have a red hint to them and could represent blood. Also the neck is a very vital part of the body so it makes the audience cringe.

  2. The shaving scene builds tension because he slowly drags the razor along his throat. From the images that audience have already seen , this adds to the eeriness and highlights the theme as thriller. The use of many extreme close ups in this opening sequence is to show the importance of a specific point of view and also emphasise on the everyday routines. The fact that you can not see the whole of what is going on makes it seem creepy, because it lets the viewer question weather or not the he is doing just normal daily routines. It makes it seem more sinister. The transition from the pure white to the red stained sink could suggest that this character could turn from pure and kind or angry and blood lusting, The drops of blood could also mimic that of a victim, however the audience have just seen him shaving.

  3. The meat is used to look like human flesh. The editing in this is quick and rough. This puts the audience more on edge because they are not sure if he is just making breakfast or something more sinister. Character movement and expression is hard for this one because you never see his face until the ending. The ketchup used in this clip represents blood splatter. There is a strong theme of blood shown throughout out the opening sequence. First shown with the mosquito and then the title card, with the red writing, and then again when shaving. This gives narrative to the opening sequence because it gives you little hints about the story line before you have even watched it. It is also showing you his morning routine.

  4. The close-ups used tend to focus on things related to death - the knife slicing the orange, the floss restricting blood flow and the blood splattering onto the sink. The character movement and expression in the last part makes Dexter seem like a average guy. He has this slight charm about he with his half smile. This gets the audience to like him, even though he could well be a killer. The opening sequence foreshadows the character’s (Dexter) murderous rituals and yet provides a point of identification for the viewers through a focus on seemingly-everyday behavior. There is a part where Dexter is shown locking the door. This could suggest that he is living two different lives and keeps the killer side locked away. The contrast between the darker inside and the light outside highlight that point.
