  1. Unemployment

  2. Unemployment • Youth Unemployment July 2012

  3. Unemployment • By the end of today’s lesson you will understand that there are different types of unemployment • You’ll also look at the different costs of unemployment, not only economic but also social

  4. Unemployment • Write down 3 reasons why you think people lose their jobs • Write down 2 possible consequences of high unemployment (for individuals or communities)

  5. Frictional Unemployment • Short term unemployment • Not considered serious • Workers moving between jobs • Time spent out of work will vary

  6. Seasonal Unemployment • Will affect industries such as construction and tourism • Tends to rise in the winter • Unavoidable in a market economy with a variable labour demand

  7. Cyclical Unemployment • Occurs when the economy is experiencing a downturn • Because there is not enough demand in the economy for all potential workers to gain employment

  8. Structural Unemploment • When demand for labour is less than its supply • Can be sub-divided into regional, sectoral and technological unemployment.

  9. Activities • Read through page 194 to note down different types of structural unemployment. • In pairs, discuss, agree and write down answers to question 2 (p 194).

  10. The costs of unemployment • The unemployed … and their dependents … will lose income • Against this, there may be benefits, both financial and in increased leisure time • Should age be a barrier to employment?

  11. One academic study published in 2001 found that • “Redundancy ranks behind only bereavement and divorce as a life- disrupting event. Even once the immediate trauma is past, the damage persists.”

  12. Activity • Unemployment has costs not only for individuals and their families, but also for local communities, taxpayers and indeed the whole economy. • Working in pairs, use the information on pages 195 and 196 to consider this hypothesis – “The social costs of unemployment are far more serious than the economic costs.” • Report your conclusions back to the rest of the class

  13. Homework • Read through information on pages 199 and 200 • Answer questions 1 and 2 on page 200
