Free Land! • Applicants could get 160 acres of land in the west for (very nearly) free • To get the land you had to: • Pay a small fee • Be 21 years old or the head of your family • Be a citizen of the USA or apply for citizenship • Build a house on the homestead • Stay on the homestead for 5 years (at least 6 months each year)

  3. Uncle Sam’s Rich Enough to Give Us All a Farm • Read and annotate the document • Look for both positive and negative aspects of the Homestead Act

  4. Evaluating the Homestead Act • Convert your annotations into a T-chart of the positive and negative aspects of the Homestead Act

  5. Discussion • Did the Homestead Act have a mostly positive or a mostly negative impact on the United States? • Support your position with evidence
