  1. 1 Samuel 16:1 Set aside • God setting the first aside for the second is a pattern. • The first Adam set aside for the Last Adam. • Ishmael set aside for Isaac. • Esau set aside for Jacob. • Saul set aside for David. • The flesh set aside for the spirit.

  2. 1 Samuel16:2,3 Sacrifice • There were two sacrifices requiring a heifer. • Numbers 19 required the sacrifice of a red heifer to cleansesomeone when they became defiled. • Deuteronomy 21 required the sacrifice of a heifer to removeguilt from a city when someone was slain and they didn’t know who did it.

  3. 1 Samuel 16:4,5 Sanctified • To sanctify means to prepare, dedicate, to be setapart.

  4. 1 Samuel 16:6-10 Service • When God chooses a person to a place of service he looks at inner person, not the outer person.

  5. 1 Samuel 16:11-13 Skipped • The one that God chose to be king wasn’t considered by his family.

  6. 1 Samuel 16:13-15 Switched • David is to serve with the spirit. • God’s spirit doesn’t empower someone living in the flesh.

  7. 1 Samuel 16:16-20 Search • The evil spirit causes Saul to search out David.

  8. 1 Samuel 16:21-23 Solution • The evil spirit would depart in the presence of David praising God.
