  2. El Pretérito: • is a past tense (“-ed”) or irregulars • talks about what happened • is a completed action I talked to my friend. (regular) I bought a shirt. (irregular in ) I paid in cash. (irregular)

  3. The stem for regular verbs in the pretérito is the infinitive stem. To take, to drink Tomar tom- To talk Hablar habl- To eat Comer com- To drink Beber beb- To open Abrir abr- To leave Salir sal-

  4. -aste -ó -amos -asteis -aron Pretérito endings for -ar verbs are:

  5. -iste -ió -imos -isteis -ieron Pretérito endings for –er / -ir verbs are:

  6. REMEMBER: • accents on the “yo” form and the “él / ella / Ud.” form • -ar / -ir “nosotros” form is the same in present and preterit

  7. Hablé hablaste habló hablamos hablasteis hablaron hablar (-ar verbs) Por ejemplo:

  11. Verbs ending in -car, -gar, and-zar have a spelling change in the “yo” form only of the pretérito. Unos Irregulares: cqu, sacar  yo saqué ggu, pagar  yo pagué zc, empezar  yo empecé

  12. The “yo” form of the pretérito changes to conserve the sound of the infinitive: -car -gar -zar “-qué” “-gué” “-cé” “tocé” “jugé” “rezé”

  22. Stem Changing Verbs: Remember the shoe verbs?Well, they will be a bit tricky in the preterite also... Dormir servir pedir repetir vestirse divertirse preferir morir sentir But only if they end in –IR!!!!!!

  23. pensé pensaste pensó pensamos pensasteis pensaron Stem Changing Verbs Pensar (e-ie, in the present) is a stem changing verb. But it ends in –AR so it doesn’t make any changes in the preterite
