  1. Ecosystems 4th Grade Science 2013 4.L.1.3, 4.L.1.4

  2. Words to Know! • Find the following words in your science text book glossary: • Environment: • Adaptation: • Organism: Any living thing (plant or animal)

  3. What is adaptation? • Adaptations are traits (body parts or behaviors) that help living things survive and reproduce. • For example, polar bears have thick, white fur that helps them stay warm and sneak up on their prey. • What are some examples of an adaptation that you can think of? (Think/Pair/Share)

  5. How do structural adaptations differ from behavioral adaptations? • Living things have structural adaptations that help them survive. For example, a fawn, or young deer, is born with dark fur and white spots. The fawn has information in its cells that determines the color of its fur. Organisms can also be born with certain behaviors. Fawns stay very still so predators don’t see them. The way an animal acts can also help it survive.

  6. Why is adaptation important for survival? • Adaptations help living things survive by giving one animal a better change of survival than another. Sometimes the animal has a better chance to hide. This is how a lead bug can hide in leaves. Its body shape is an adaptation. Bugs that look like leaves are better able to survive.

  7. Survival Video Clip • http://app.discoveryeducation.com/techbook2:concept/view/guidConceptId/7c69eef8-8f59-462e-948c-d8887dce7d88/guidUnitId/47237f67-6147-4b55-b287-bf10ac6b004a#

  8. QUIZ!!! • On a piece of binder paper, answer the following questions: • 1) What is adaptation? Give at least one example. • 2) Why is adaptation important for survival?
