  1. THE 7 SACRAMENTS Timothy 2:5

  2. A sacrament is an outward efficacious sign instituted by Christ to give grace. • Jesus Christ Himself is the primordial sacrament as He gave His life to save mankind. His humanity is the outward sign or the instrument of his Divinity.

  3. The Church is the living symbol of the presence of God in our midst for through the Church we can receive the sacrament.

  4. The 7 Sacraments are dividedinto Three Major Categories: A. The Sacraments of Christian Initiation are: 1. Baptism 2.Confirmation 3. Holy Eucharist B. The Sacraments of Healing are: 4. Confession 5.Anointing of the Sick C. The Sacraments of service: 6. Marriage 7. Holy Orders

  5. The Three Essential Elements of Each Sacrament are 1. Minister: the one administering the sacrament; 2. Matter: the visible object used for the sacrament; 3. Form: the word used to celebrate, the sacrament.

  6. BAPTISM Matthew 28:19-20 • Meaning and Importance of the Sacrament of Baptism: • Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, as we are born of the water and the Spirit.

  7. It is the sacrament of faith because it brings us new life in Christ, forgiveness of our sins, make us belong to the family of God as we become member of the Body of Christ which is the Church. • As we receive the Sacrament of Baptism we become adopted sons and daughters of God and we share in the Divine Life of the Trinity

  8. Effects of the Sacrament of Baptism: . 1. Baptism cleans us from original sin, all personal sins and all punishment due to sin. 2. It makes us sharer of the divine life of the trinity. 3. Makes us belong to the family of God as we become adopted sons and daughters of God. 4. It gives one a share in the priesthood of Christ.

  9. It bestows the theological virtues of faith, hope and love. • 6. Empowers us the gifts of the Holy Spirit. • 7. A baptized person belongs forever to Christ. He is marked with the indelibleseal of Christ (character) ( Compendium of CCC 263).

  10. CONFIRMATION Acts 19:1-6 Meaning and Importance of the Sacrament of Confirmation: • Confirmation is the sacrament of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit whom Christ Jesus sent (John 16:7).

  11. It is called sacrament of confirmation because it confirms and strengthens baptismal grace (Compendium of CCC 266). • It is the efficient sign of grace that confers the Holy Spirit and make us witnesses of Christ.

  12. Jesus instructed his Apostles that they "will receive the power of the Holy Spirit" and called upon the Apostles to be his "witnesses to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

  13. At the Pentecost, the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4), and began to spread the Word of God. • The Acts of the Apostles is often called the Gospel of the Holy Spirit.

  14. Effects of the Sacraments: • 1.We are perfectly bound to the Church as sons and daughters of God. • 2.It unites us more closely to Christ • 3.It increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us and makes us strong • 4.It cause us a deeper relationship to the Church • 5.It makes us resilient witnesses of Christ in thoughts, words and actions (CCC1303).

  15. THE EUCHARIST Corinthians 11:23-26 Meaning and Importance of the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist: • Eucharist means thanks giving the source and summit of the Christian life. It is also called Mass. • The word Mass refer to the mission or sending forth of the faithful following the celebration.

  16. In the cross we had seen the bloody offering of Jesus but in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist He continuously offering Himself for us in the form of the bread and wine that brings us the real presence of Christ

  17. As we receive the bread and wine in communion we receive Jesus. • Thus Eucharist is not only the memorial of Jesus death and resurrection but the continuous offering of Himself for us today.

  18. It is a sign of unity because as we join in the Celebration of the Eucharist we are also united with our brother and sister regardless of our age, condition and status in life. • This is also a celebration that gathers all of us rich or poor, sinners or righteous etc.

  19. It is a bond of charity and a paschal banquet because as Jesus gives himself to us in communion He challenges us also to do the same. • To serve and help others especially our poor brothers and sisters (Compendium of CCC 271).

  20. The Effects of the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist: (Compendium of CCC 1751) • 1.It unites us with Christ • 2.It separates us from sin • 3.It reconciles us with one another, and • 4.It builds up the Christian Community, the Church.

  21. CONFESSION John 20:21 Meaning and Importance of the Sacrament of Confessiont • Jesus Christ gave his Apostles the power to forgive sins. • Confession is the sacrament instituted by Jesus through whom a repentant sinner is reconciled with God and with the Church. (Rev. Fr. Paolo O. Pirlo).

  22. Confession gives one a wonderful sense of freedom and peace from the burden of sin. As we commit sin we feel sorrow, affliction, and a desire for conversion. • Jesus would like to help us through His Church in the person of the priest who administers the sacrament of confession as we confess but Jesus is the one who forgives..

  23. The effects of the Sacrament of Confession: • 1.Restoration of the Sanctifying Grace, which is the communion with God we lost with our mortal sins; • 2.Reconciliation with the Church, which we have scandalized and offended with our sins. (Rev. Fr. Paolo O Pirlo, SHMI).

  24. THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK Mark 6:12-13 Meaning and Importance of the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick: • Jesus healed the blind and the sick, as well as commissioned his Apostles to do so. • The Anointing of the Sick is the Sacrament given to seriously ill Christians, and the special graces received unite the sick person to the passion of Christ.

  25. The Anointing of the Sick is the Sacrament which, through the laying of hands, the prayer of faith, and the anointing with blessed oil, provided the sick with Christ’s healing grace of the Holy Spirit.(CFC 1866).

  26. The Effects of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick: • 1.The uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church; • 2.The strengthening, peace and courage to endure in a Christianmanner the suffering of illness or old age;

  27. 3.The forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the sacrament of confession; • 4.The restoration of health, if it is conducive to salvation of his soul; • 5.The preparation for passing over to eternal life.

  28. HOLY ORDER Acts 20:28 Meaning and Importance of the Sacrament of Holy Order: • The whole Church is a priestly people. Through Baptism all the faithful share in the priesthood of Christ (CCC1591).

  29. The ministerial priesthood differs in essence from the common priesthood of the faithful because it confers a sacred power for the service of the faithful. • The ordained ministers exercise their service for the people of God by teaching, divine worship and pastoral governance (CCC1592).

  30. Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Jesus to his Apostles continues to be exercised in the Church to the end of time.

  31. The ordained ministry is exercised in three different degrees:1 Bishops, on whom the fullness of the priesthood is conferred; 2. Priest, who serve the Church as co-workers under the Bishop; and 3.Deacons who minister in various ways in the service of the Liturgy, the Gospels and works of Charity. See (Matthew 16:18-19, John 21:15-17, Romans 10:14-15, 2 Timothy 1:6, and Titus 1:5)

  32. The effects of the Sacrament of Holy Orders: • 1.This sacrament yields a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit which configures the recipient to Christ in his triple office as Priest, Prophet, and King, according to the respective degrees of the sacrament.

  33. 2. Ordination confers an indelible spiritual character and therefore cannot be repeated or conferred for a limited time.

  34. 3.Thomas Aquinas makes the important point that only Christ is the true priest, the others serving as his ministers (Hebrews 8:4). • 4.Bishops are the successors of the Apostles, and priests and deacons are his assistants in rendering service.

  35. 5.Men are ordained to the priesthood in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, as the sacrament confers upon the priest the character to act in the person of Christ in persona Christi.

  36. MARRIAGE Genesis 2:24 Meaning and Importance of the Sacrament of Marriage: • The union of a man and a woman is natural. • The natural language of the human body is such that the man gives to the woman and the woman receives the man.

  37. The love and friendship between a man and a woman grow into desire for Marriage. • Marriage is a unique sacrament which built into the very nature of our human reality as we are created as male and female, through God’s love, in the image of God who is love, and called to a covenant of loving one another, in sharing God’s own divine love (CFC 1996).

  38. Marriage is also a covenant by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of love for the whole life. • This intimate community of life and love is by its nature ordered to the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of Children.

  39. Marriage is a sacrament because the covenant between the spouses signifies the union of Christ and the Church. • It gives spouses the grace to love each other with the love with which Christ has loved the Church ( CCC1661). • This covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ to the dignity of a sacrament. • ( JennelTonel, SHMI)

  40. It is very important for a Christian to follow the commandment of God and the teaching of the Church to continue to live in the grace of God. • Upon entering into marriage it is necessary for them to make their union a sacramental marriage. • Those who contract only civil marriage and live together are in a state of sin.

  41. The effects of the Sacrament of Marriage: • 1.The sacrament of marriage helps the husband and wife to live in the grace of God. As they go on with their journey as husband and wife they will encounter joy, pain and sufferings in their family life but they are not alone. God is always with them. In prayer they can always ask the help of God especially through the help of other sacraments.

  42. 2.The sacrament of marriage establishes a perpetual bond between the spouses. God himself seals the consent of the spouses. Therefore, a marriage which is ratified and consummated between baptized persons can never be dissolved..

  43. 3.This sacrament bestows upon the spouses the grace necessary to attain holiness in their married life and be able to do their responsibility to love and provide the needs of their children (Compendium of CCC 346).

  44. 4.The bond of marriage between a man and a woman lasts all the days of their lives. The bond of marriage is compared to God's undying love for Israel in the Old Testament, and Christ's love for his Church in the New Testament of the Bible.

  45. 6.The sacrament of marriage gives the couple the grace to grow into a union of heart and soul, to continue life, and to provide stability for themselves and their children. Children are the fruit and bond of a marriage.
