Adding like sign integers
ADDING LIKE SIGN INTEGERS

  • If the signs of both numbers are alike, (both positive or both negative) add the two numbers and keep the same sign as in the original problem.

  • Example: -4 + -8 = -12

  • Example: 5 + 8 = 13


Adding unlike sign integers

  • If the signs are different, (one sign is positive and one sign is negative) subtract the two numbers without the signs and keep the sign of the number farthest from zero.

  • Example: -10 + 4 =

  • Example: 14+ -18 =

  • Example: -7 + 12 =

  • Example: 14 + -3 =

  • Example: -4 + 4 =

  • 1. Change subtraction sign to addition.

  • 2. Change the sign of the second integer to the opposite sign. (If it is negative, make it positive.)

  • 3. Follow addition rules.

  • Example: -5 – 12 =

  • Example: -40 ÷ -10 =
